Tupac Shakur‘s family has filed a wrongful death lawsuit against Duane Keith “Keffe D” Davis, who was charged with the 1996 murder of the rapper. The filing references new claims highlighted in the Netflix documentary “Sean Combs: The Reckoning,” which reportedly shed more light on Tupac’s murder.

The lawsuit comes just months ahead of Keffe D’s trial for first-degree murder, adding further legal attention to the decades-old case.

On April 28, Tupac Shakur’s family filed a wrongful death lawsuit against Keffe D and “John Does 1 to 100,” The filing notes statements and information included in the Netflix documentary “Sean Combs: The Reckoning,” which was released in December 2025.

The Shakur family’s lawyer stated that several individuals were involved in the murder of Tupac, and they have not been held accountable. The civil lawsuit seeks to “recover damages for the wrongful death” of the rapper. The speculation that Diddy was involved in the crime was also mentioned in the filing, which noted that the Netflix documentary “lent credibility to a theory” that the disgraced rapper “was involved in Tupac’s murder,” per Billboard.

Shortly after Tupac’s murder in 1996, rumors started circulating that Diddy was involved, largely due to the hip-hop community’s East Coast/West Coast rivalry. The speculation gained traction over the years, more so when Diddy was arrested in 2024 on racketeering and sex trafficking charges.

The Lawsuit Will Be Amended As More Details Come To Light

“John Does 1 to 100” serve as placeholders in the lawsuit and will be replaced with the defendants’ actual names as more details become available. The practice is used in legal proceedings when the name of the party is unknown at the time a lawsuit is filed. Per the wrongful death suit, the John Does pertain to “individuals who may have participated in planning, financing, directing or carrying out the conspiracy.”

The names of the individuals who were allegedly involved in Tupac’s murder will be identified during the discovery process, and they will be added to the civil lawsuit. “Many individuals who were involved have long since passed away, while others have been hard to identify,” the document read.

Tupac Shakur’s 1996 Murder

On September 7, 1996, Tupac and record executive Suge Knight attended a boxing match in Las Vegas. After the match, the two men left the venue in a black BMW sedan with Knight in the driver’s seat. At about 11:15 p.m., a white Cadillac pulled up beside the BMW, and the back passenger window rolled down. A man then rapidly fired shots into Knight and Shakur’s vehicle before speeding off.

Knight was grazed with fragments, and Shakur sustained gunshot wounds in the chest, arm, and thigh. The rapper was transported to a hospital where he underwent several surgeries to save his life. He was put on life support for several days but never recovered. Tupac died on September 13, 1996, at 25 years old.

Keffe D Publicly Spoke About Tupac’s Murder

In 2023, Keffe D, a former Crips gang member, was arrested in connection with the murder of Tupac. Since the murder, Keffe D has publicly admitted that he was in the Cadillac on that fateful night. In 2019, he released a memoir, “Compton Street Legend: Notorious Keffe D’s Street-Level Accounts of Tupac and Biggie Murders, Death Row Origins, Suge Knight, Puffy Combs, and Crooked Cops,” in which he detailed the night of the murder.

Keffe D alleged that Diddy ordered the hit on Tupac, but it became personal to him when Tupac and Knight allegedly had an altercation with his nephew, Baby Lane. Per his account, he was in the backseat of the Cadillac and gave the shooter the gun that was used to murder Tupac.

Keffe D wrote that he was remorseful, but added, “I stand firm on the point that Tupac, Suge Knight and the rest of those n—–s have any business putting their hands on my beloved nephew Baby Lane. Period. Them jumping on my nephew gave us the ultimate green light to do something to their a–.”

Keffe D is the only individual charged in connection with Tupac’s murder. He pleaded not guilty and has since claimed that his prior statements about the shooting, including his memoir, were fabricated. He also said his confession was made under duress.

In 2025, the defendant filed a motion to dismiss the murder charges, but his petition was denied. The murder trial was initially scheduled for March 2025, but Keffe D’s counsel requested more time, which was granted. It was pushed back to February 9, 2026, but as new evidence emerged, it was postponed again. The trial is scheduled to begin on August 10.
