At the time, the remark seemed like standard late-night satire. However, the tone of the joke shifted dramatically after a gunman attempted to storm the Washington Hilton ballroom during the actual event. 

Authorities later described the situation as a suspected assassination attempt targeting Donald Trump and members of his administration.

In the aftermath, both Melania and the president publicly criticized Jimmy Kimmel, calling on ABC to take action. The backlash quickly intensified, with the First Lady issuing a statement labeling him a “coward.”

“Kimmel hides behind ABC because he knows the network will keep running cover to protect him,” she added, after which she urged the network “to take a stand.” 

Melania also argued that “people like Kimmel shouldn’t have the opportunity to enter our homes each evening to spread hate.”

Kimmel continued, noting that anyone who believed his joke triggered the shooting should also consider White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt.

“Maybe you should look into this psychic lady, too,” the host said, leading into a video of Leavitt being interviewed by Fox News ahead of the White House Correspondent Dinner, in which she said, “It’ll be funny, it’ll be entertaining. There will be some shots fired tonight.”

They added, “ABC and Disney aren’t looking to fire him or suspend him again after Melania’s tirade.”
