Bruce Springsteen struck a different tone during his latest concert, surprising fans with a message of unity following the White House Correspondents’ Dinner shooting. The President and First Lady were rushed out of the dinner Saturday night before the event could fully get underway. Secret Service agents flooded the Washington Hilton ballroom after a series of “loud noises,” with authorities later identifying the suspected shooter as 31-year-old Cole Tomas Allen, who allegedly breached a security checkpoint before being quickly subdued by law enforcement.

Performing at the Moody Center in Austin, Texas, the 76-year-old opened his show by acknowledging the incident and expressing relief that Donald Trump and others in attendance were unharmed.

“We begin tonight with a prayer for our men and women overseas, we pray for their safe return,” Springsteen said. “We also send out a prayer of thanks that our President, nor anyone in the administration, nor anyone attending, was injured at last night’s incident at the Press Correspondents’ Dinner.”

The message marked a notable shift for the rock icon, who has long been a vocal critic of Trump. Still, Springsteen emphasized that disagreement doesn’t justify violence. “We can disagree,” he said. “We can be critical of those in power, and we can peacefully fight for our beliefs, but there is no place in any way, shape, or form for political violence of any kind in our beloved United States.”

The reaction online was mixed, with some questioning the sincerity of his remarks. One user wrote, “Then he carried on with the show that centers on dehumanizing and vilifying the President in one of Bruce’s patented 3 1/2 hour binge-fests.” Another added, “Yeah, he’s trying to boost his falling/failing ratings.”

Others were more critical, with one commenting, “He wasn’t sincere; it was just because of the backlash he has received. He doesn’t want to lose money. Hypocrite!!!!” Another echoed, “Someone realized that all the hate and violence they incite actually has consequences and is now trying to desperately not get caught up in the mess.”

Springsteen has consistently used his platform to address political issues, often encouraging fans to take action. During his ongoing Land of “Hope and Dreams Tour,” he’s continued to urge audiences to stay engaged, frequently closing shows with a call for peaceful activism.

“Find a way to take aggressive, peaceful action to defend our country’s ideals and, as the great civil rights leader John Lewis said, ‘Go out and get into some good trouble,'” he said.

Alongside his recent calls for unity, Bruce Springsteen has also continued using his music to address major political moments. His 2026 song “Streets of Minneapolis” was written, recorded, and released in late January following the deaths of Alex Pretti and Renée Good during an anti-ICE demonstration tied to “Operation Metro Surge” in the Twin Cities.

“They’re going to make mistakes sometimes. ICE is going to be too rough with somebody, or they’re dealing with rough people,” Trump said of the incident involving Good. “They’re going to make a mistake sometimes. It can happen. We feel terribly. I felt horribly when I was told that the young woman … the tragedy. It’s a tragedy. It’s a horrible thing. Everybody would say, ICE would say the same thing.”

The back-and-forth between Donald Trump and Bruce Springsteen intensified earlier this month after the president fired off a harsh message on social media. Posting on Truth Social on April 2, Trump responded to Springsteen’s onstage remarks, where the singer called him “reckless, racist, and treasonous,” with a blistering takedown.

“Bad, and very boring singer, Bruce Springsteen, who looks like a dried-up prune who has suffered greatly from the work of a really bad plastic surgeon, has long had a horrible and incurable case of Trump Derangement Syndrome, sometimes referred to as TDS,” Trump wrote.

He continued by labeling the rock icon “a total loser who spews hate,” while also touting his own record in office and encouraging supporters to turn away from Springsteen’s shows. “MAGA SHOULD BOYCOTT HIS OVERPRICED CONCERTS, WHICH SUCK,” he added. “SAVE YOUR HARD-EARNED MONEY. AMERICA IS BACK!!!”
