Redmond O’Neal, the son of late Hollywood stars Ryan O’Neal and Farrah Fawcett, appeared in court on multiple serious charges, including attempted murder, as proceedings continued in Los Angeles.

The 41-year-old, who has a history of substance abuse and mental health treatment, arrived at Airport Courthouse in jail clothing and handcuffs.

According to photos obtained by the New York Post, he appeared visibly worn, with tattoos covering much of his body, including devil horns inked on his forehead. His attorney, Dana Cole, joined the hearing remotely, while Redmond offered brief, quiet responses to the judge before the session concluded within minutes.

The hearing was short and primarily centered on a defense request for additional evidence. Proceedings were quickly adjourned, with Redmond remaining in custody at Patton State Hospital as the case moved forward.

Redmond’s legal troubles span many years and are closely tied to ongoing battles with addiction and mental illness. Since his teenage years, he has undergone multiple rehabilitation attempts, but continued to face relapses and repeated arrests.

In 2018, he was detained following a violent incident in Los Angeles involving multiple victims during what authorities described as a crime spree. That case led to charges including attempted murder and assault with a deadly weapon.

Court-ordered psychiatric evaluations have previously pointed to severe mental health conditions, including schizophrenia and bipolar disorder, raising questions about his competency to stand trial.

As a result, his proceedings have often been delayed while experts assessed his mental state, leading to long periods spent in both detention centers and psychiatric facilities.

Redmond’s difficulties have often been discussed in the context of a turbulent family history. He began his career as a child voice actor, with credits including “Johnny Bravo” and the 1998 film “The Brave Little Toaster Goes to Mars,” and later worked briefly behind the scenes on projects such as “Love Don’t Cost a Thing” in 2001.

However, his transition into adulthood was increasingly overshadowed by legal issues, beginning with drug-related arrests as early as 2005, followed by DUI charges and other offenses that resulted in probation and fines.

In 2008, he and his father were both arrested after authorities reportedly found methamphetamine during a search of their Malibu home. Over time, his record continued to grow, marked by repeated drug-related charges as well as misdemeanors related to paraphernalia and other items.

Family members have also spoken publicly about the strain his struggles placed on them. His mother, Fawcett, died in 2009 after a battle with cancer, and his father, Ryan, passed away in 2023 at the age of 82.

Friends close to the family have said Fawcett remained deeply concerned about her son until her final days, hoping he would be cared for after her death.

According to her close friend and conservator, Mela Murphy, Fawcett’s last moments were marked by repeated calls for Redmond.

Murphy recalled assuring her she would look after him and always be there for him, a conversation that took place just hours before the actress passed away.

Despite his public image and visible tattoos in court, Murphy shared a more hopeful update in a statement to People Magazine in March.

She said he has made significant progress since the alleged 2018 incident for which he is currently facing trial.

Murphy described Redmond as having remained “drug-free and a model patient for five years now at Patton State Hospital,” adding that he has shown steady improvement during that time. She said he has been diagnosed appropriately, is now on medication, and is receiving consistent mental health support.

She also suggested that his past struggles with substance abuse were closely tied to untreated mental health issues earlier in his life.

According to her, with that support now in place, “he is participating in 12-step recovery, helps out patients, reads every day, and has found a spiritual life.”

She added, “There are many friends and supporters of Redmond who are in contact with him and are so proud of his journey to recovery.”

Redmond’s half-sister, Tatum O’Neal, has previously talked about his struggles, describing years of addiction and the emotional toll it has taken on the family, including her own health challenges.

She told People that she had hoped to be a support system for Redmond after his mother’s passing, but felt overwhelmed by the severity of his condition, describing it as something that had deeply taken hold of his life.

“I wanted to mother him. Now that his mother is gone, I wanted him to know there was a woman in his life he could turn to. But unfortunately, the disease has overtaken him,” she said.
