Bryan Kohberger‘s mom, Maryann, doesn’t see her son the way the world sees him. A new report has claimed that she described the serial killer as an “angel” during her interview with the FBI.
She also defended her son against the crimes and emphasized that the authorities had made a mistake.
Maryann and her son were known to have had a very close relationship and often spent hours on the phone. For now, it is unclear whether she has visited him in prison since his sentencing in July 2025.
Maryann Kohberger Said The Police Made A Horrible Mistake By Arresting Her ‘Angel’ Son

Details of Bryan Kohberger’s mother’s interview with the FBI have emerged, revealing how adamant she was that her son was not a killer.
As obtained by the Daily Mail, Maryann Kohberger described her son as an “angel,” despite him at the time being accused of the gruesome murders of Kaylee Goncalves, Madison Mogen, Xana Kernodle, and Ethan Chapin at their off-campus home.
Maryann, who has two other children besides Kohberger, also outright stated in the interview that the authorities had made a horrible mistake in arresting and charging her son for the quadruple homicide.
When asked by an agent if she was concerned about her son’s past behaviors in light of the Idaho murders, Maryann responded, “Never, ever, ever.”
“There’s a mistake, something is wrong somewhere. And that’s what I believe. And that’s what I know in my heart,” she continued, insisting he had no anger issues.
The Idaho killer’s mother then simply told the agent: “He’s my angel.”
The alleged murder weapon also came up during the interview, with Maryann revealing that her son did have a knife that she had advised him to purchase to fend off bear attacks during his personal hiking trips.
Byran Kohberger Shared A Close Relationship With His Mother

Over the course of Kohberger’s saga, his unusually close relationship with his mother became known.
Previous reports revealed that the convicted murderer first called his mother, Maryann, around hours after the murders.
When he couldn’t reach her, he proceeded to text his father asking for their whereabouts. He was ultimately able to reach her, and their conversation lasted 36 minutes.
Some other reports also confirmed that it wasn’t unusual for the pair to have lengthy conversations at strange hours, and that he would sometimes call as early as 4 a.m.
While in detention, the calls continued, with one inmate claiming that Kohberger would spend hours each day on video calls with his mother.
He also became angry when another inmate appeared to mock her during one of those conversations.
Bryan Kohberger Had No Words For His Mother During His Setencing

Despite the closeness Kohberger and his mother shared, he did not bid her goodbye during his sentencing in July 2025.
She and his sister Amanda were the only members of his family who showed up to the sentencing, with his father staying away.
Throughout much of the proceeding, Maryann appeared emotionally overwhelmed, tearing up as it became clear her son would likely spend the rest of his life in prison.
At one point, she could be seen visibly shuddering and burying her face in her hands as the weight of his crimes hit deeply.
The Idaho Killer Accepted A Plea Deal Days After Learning His Sister Was On The Witness List

Unlike Kohberger’s mother, his sister, Amanda, had a blank stare during his sentencing but was likely grieving inwardly over the situation.
According to previous reports, Kohberger’s guilty plea may have been partly due to his sister, as he agreed to a deal days after learning that Amanda had been placed on a witness list by the prosecutors in an attempt to “establish certain facts.”
It is unclear whether any of them have visited Kohberger since he began serving his sentence at the Idaho Maximum Security Institution.
He is allowed visitors on specific days despite being in one of the most restrictive housing units within the Idaho facility.
Bryan Kohberger Reportedly Enjoyed Killing His Female Victims

The painful nature of the death of Kohberger’s victims was further highlighted by a report in February.
The report revealed that Ethan Chapin sustained 17 wounds, while the female victims suffered injuries in similar locations but in greater numbers.
Kaylee Goncalves was stabbed at least 38 times, Madison Mogen received roughly 10 fewer wounds, and Xana Kernodle tragically sustained the most, with 67 stab wounds documented.
According to former FBI agent Jennifer Coffindaffer, the number of wounds suggests that the convicted murderer “enjoyed killing the women,” a claim reinforced by the severity of some of the injuries, which included deep vertical and wide horizontal wounds, with some penetrating bone.
“When you really look at the numbers now that have been released… it brings to light the true barbarian nature of this crime,” Coffindaffer said of the murders, with a reported 150 stab wounds.
“This wasn’t a murder – this was a slaughter,” she added about the gruesome killings.
