The start of Queen Elizabeth II’s 100th anniversary celebrations struck an unexpectedly subdued tone, with noticeably sparse crowds lining the streets. This low turnout happened despite a recent public opinion poll that proved her enduring popularity among the British public.

The commemorations officially got underway with King Charles III and Queen Camilla making an appearance at Buckingham Palace’s “Her Life in Style” exhibition, a tribute to the late monarch’s legacy and influence.

Despite widespread public support reflected in recent polls, the kickoff of Elizabeth’s 100th anniversary celebrations drew a noticeably muted public presence.

Images circulating online, including a widely shared Reddit post, appeared to show little visible crowd activity outside Buckingham Palace during what was expected to be a major commemorative event. The opening event saw the King and his wife visit The King’s Gallery, where the “Her Life in Style” exhibition is currently on display.

The subdued turnout certainly raised eyebrows, particularly given a recent survey by YouGov found that 81% of respondents held a positive opinion of the late Queen.

Reddit Users Troll King Charles And Camilla Over Low Turnout

On social media, some observers seized on the subdued turnout to mock the royal couple, with several suggesting they were attempting to capitalize on the Queen’s enduring popularity.

“Chuckles and his 2nd wife are really trying to hype up and ride off the hype of a woman who has been dead for 4 years,” one user wrote.

Others went further, framing the 100th anniversary events as a calculated optics play rather than a genuine moment of remembrance. “Cynical PR move,” one commenter described it, adding that such efforts were unlikely to land in the same way given shifting public sentiment toward the monarchy.

“The public is now much more cynical & resentful about this dysfunctional family & the outdated concept of monarchy in 2026,” another critic remarked.

The exhibition that Charles and Camilla visited at Buckingham Palace is dedicated to the most treasured items from Queen Elizabeth’s wardrobe, including her christening gown and wedding dress.

As part of the 100th anniversary program, the King and senior officials are also expected to visit the British Museum to review final designs for a proposed national memorial honoring the late monarch.

The memorial is set to be located in St. James’s Park, just a short distance from Buckingham Palace, and will include statues of both the Queen and her husband, Prince Philip.

Meanwhile, Princess Anne is slated to officially open the Queen Elizabeth II Garden in Regent’s Park.

King Charles’s Message About The Late Queen Touched On Her Devotion

In a message marking his mother’s 100th anniversary, the King reflected on his late mother’s enduring impact, describing her as someone “who meant so much to us all.”

He noted that her reign spanned a period of “remarkable change,” defined by her unwavering sense of duty and deep devotion to the people of the United Kingdom.

“Millions will remember her for moments of national significance; many others for a fleeting personal encounter, a smile, a kind word that lifted spirits… or for that marvelous twinkle of the eye when sharing a marmalade sandwich with Paddington Bear in the final months of her life,” Charles said.

In the same message, the reigning monarch also pledged to carry forward that legacy, vowing to continue serving the public for as long as he remains on the throne.

Camilla also reflected on her late mother-in-law’s deep sense of responsibility in a recent BBC documentary that aired last Sunday.

“I don’t think I’ve ever seen anybody have a sense of duty like she had,” she said of Queen Elizabeth II, according to PEOPLE Magazine.

Elizabeth ascended the throne at just 25 in 1952 and remained there until her death in September 2022 at age 96. Camilla noted that taking on such a role at a young age would have come with immense pressure, particularly in an era when women were rarely in positions of power.

“It must have been so difficult, being surrounded by much older men,” she said in the doc. “I think she carved her own role.”
