Joseph Duggar‘s run-in with the law is set to take a drastic turn as experts suggest his own admission may come back to haunt him.

The “19 Kids and Counting” star is facing charges of lewd and lascivious behavior on a minor after allegedly harassing a child in Florida back in 2020.

Joseph Duggar’s wife, Kendra, who was also briefly arrested, recently revealed in a jail call with him that they’ve lost custody of their four children amid their legal woes.

Legal experts are warning that the 31-year-old may have already sealed his own fate amid his legal troubles.

Investigators claim Joseph admitted to carrying out the crime on several occasions, including in a purported confrontation with the victim’s father as well as a recorded call coordinated with law enforcement where he acknowledged that his “intentions were not pure.”

According to Fox News Digital, former federal prosecutor Neama Rahmani has shared that his admission could be “highly relevant and damaging” to his defense as it shows intent.

“It is evidence of intent, the victim, and the timing of the alleged abuse,” Rahmani told the news outlet. “His lawyers will try to argue that it is too vague and attenuated and try to get it excluded on that basis.”

The expert continued, “I don’t think they will be successful because the statement was made in the context of Duggar also admitting to inappropriate touching under a blanket. A judge is unlikely to separate the two statements, and this is why pretext calls like this can be so powerful if they lead to incriminating evidence.”

The Reality TV Star Faces Charges For Lewd Behavior

Joseph, who was recently extradited to face charges in Florida, has been in police custody since March 18, when he was arrested for allegedly making sexual contact with a nine-year-old girl during a family vacation in 2020.

The girl, now 14 years old, claimed Joseph inappropriately touched her genitals and her thighs. An affidavit filed in Bay County revealed more specific allegations against him.

“The victim stated the defendant’s hand was outside of her underwear when these incidents occurred,” the affidavit read. “The victim stated this made her feel uncomfortable and confused. The victim stated that the defendant eventually approached the victim and apologized for his actions. The incidents stopped occurring after the defendant apologized for his actions.”

Joseph Duggar’s Lawyer Can Still Make An Argument, As The Compromising Statement Is ‘Frustratingly Vague’

Criminal defense attorney Duncan Levin also told Fox News Digital that Joseph’s words in the affidavit could be up for scrutiny as the case progresses.

“‘My intentions were not pure’ is the kind of statement prosecutors love because they can frame it as a confession without the defendant ever fully confessing,” Levin said. “It gives them language they can put in front of a jury and say, in effect, he told you himself. But from a defense standpoint, that phrase is still frustratingly vague.”

Levin, who previously defended Harvey Weinstein, further explained that his words are “not a clear admission to a criminal act,” but show impure intentions and reflect shame. However, to drive home a criminal case requires “proof of conduct,” not “ambitious language.”

He noted, “The defense strategy would be to argue that prosecutors are trying to turn a morally charged but indefinite statement into something far more specific than it actually is, and to insist that the state prove the charged conduct with concrete evidence rather than asking jurors to fill in the gaps.”

The 31-Year-Old’s Statement Was Described As ‘Ambiguous’

Although Joseph’s words speak of impure intentions, legal expert Tom Maronick also suggested that it’ll take a lot more to actually convict him in court.

“The public hears language like this and frequently forms conclusions about guilt before any evidence is presented,” Maronick told Fox News Digital. “However, a jury is held to a different standard. The legal system operates on facts, statutory elements, and provable evidence, not public sentiment or emotional interpretation.”

“A single ambiguous statement, unsupported by corroborating criminal conduct, represents a significant gap between accusation and conviction,” the criminal law attorney said. “That distinction is essential in criminal defense.”

Meanwhile, Joseph’s arrest has affected him in other areas of life after his wife revealed that they’ve lost custody of their four children following both arrests.

In a recorded jail conversation obtained by TMZ, she can be heard crying profusely while telling Joseph that she has gotten her own lawyer.

“I think Friday has probably been my hardest day, but that’s crazy to say because Wednesday was crazy hard,” she told Joseph on a March 24 call. “But it’s just like, when you then take my babies from me, they were who I was just going to pour my life into.”

Kendra, who was arrested on March 20, also emphasized that she was fighting for their children as they’re her number one priority. She was released hours after she paid a $1,470 bond.

“I just want you to know, through all of this, whatever happens, that’s who’s coming first,” Kendra added. “Then we’ll just see where the rest of it leads us and try to put the pieces together.”
