Billy Crystal is still holding close to the final lesson Rob Reiner gave him, one that now carries even more weight after the director’s shocking death.
During an emotional appearance on TV, Crystal reflected on the last night he spent with Reiner before the filmmaker and his wife, Michele, were killed.
The actor also shared how that conversation inspired the moving Oscars tribute he later helped bring to life for his late friend.
Rob Reiner And Billy Crystal Spent One Final Night Together
Billy Crystal became emotional this week as he looked back on the final evening he shared with Rob Reiner before tragedy struck.
Speaking on “The Late Show with Stephen Colbert” on Tuesday, the actor revealed that he had spent time with Reiner just hours before the director and his wife, Michele, were killed at their Brentwood home on December 14.
During the interview, Colbert brought up the emotional tribute to Reiner at the 98th Academy Awards in March, where Crystal reunited with cast members from several of the late director’s most beloved films.
When Colbert asked whether the tribute had been his idea, Crystal quietly said, “Yeah, it was…” The moment clearly hit him hard. Crystal paused, took a deep breath, and exhaled shakily before opening up about the last time he saw his friend.
He said the two had attended Conan O’Brien’s Christmas party in Los Angeles the night before Reiner died.
What began as a casual holiday gathering turned into a meaningful conversation that Crystal says he has held onto ever since.
Reiner Reflected On The Movie Business Before His Death

Crystal said that during their final conversation, he and Rob Reiner found themselves talking about how much Hollywood has changed over the years.
The two longtime friends spoke candidly about careers, filmmaking, and how audiences experience movies now compared to the past.
“And the night before, it was Conan’s Christmas party, we were talking about the movie business and how it’s changed and how people don’t go to theaters like they used to,” the 78-year-old said per the Daily Mail.
That discussion eventually turned into something more personal. Crystal said they reflected on the one thing filmmakers could never truly control: how audiences respond to a finished project.
However, Reiner reminded him that there was something far more lasting than ticket sales or reviews.
“And we talked about the fact that you can’t control how a movie is going to do. What you can control is the experience of making it,” Crystal shared.
The “City Slickers” star said Reiner’s perspective stayed with him because it captured exactly what mattered most to him.
Rob Reiner Told Billy Crystal What Really Lasts

As their conversation continued that night, Reiner shared the thought that has now become even more meaningful to Crystal after losing him.
The Hollywood icon said his friend looked back on the many projects he had made, including the experiences he had shared with casts and crews over the years.
In his words, “And the experiences that we had together, and that he had with his casts of his other movies, were so extraordinary that… he said that’s something you always have. It’s the people that you hold on to.”
Crystal told Colbert that those words became something he carried with him after Reiner’s death.
That lesson helped shape what Crystal did next. After losing one of his closest friends, he reached out to O’Brien, who was set to host the 2026 Oscars.
He said he wanted to honor the late director in a way that reflected the joy he brought to so many people on and off screen.
“I said, ‘If I can get the cast of those movies together to walk out with me, that would have made him really smile,’” Crystal recalled.
That idea became the foundation for one of the night’s most emotional moments.
Reiner’s Oscars Tribute Brought His Friends Together
Crystal said the Oscars tribute became a chance not only to honor Rob Reiner’s legacy as a filmmaker, but also to celebrate the life he built with Michele.
During the ceremony, he was joined by actors from the “Stand By Me” star’s iconic films, including “The Princess Bride,” “When Harry Met Sally,” “This Is Spinal Tap,” “A Few Good Men,” and “Misery.”
The moment was deeply personal for Crystal, who said the tribute reflected the kind of connection Reiner always valued.
“We were able to hold hands and walk out there in tribute with the beautiful picture of Rob and Michele. They were our closest friends,” he explained.
That grief was also rooted in decades of friendship. Crystal said his bond with Reiner began in 1975, when he was cast as Reiner’s best friend on “All in the Family.”
After filming, the actor told him, “You know, it was fun playing your best friend. Why don’t we keep it going?” They did exactly that.
Rob Reiner’s Legacy Lives On Through His Films And Friendships

Crystal said Reiner’s greatest gift was his range, not just as a filmmaker, but as a friend and person.
During his Oscars speech and in a statement released after Reiner’s death, Crystal reflected on how much the director gave to the world.
He called it a privilege to watch Reiner grow from a comic actor into a filmmaker whose work could make people laugh, cry, and feel more deeply.
“My friends, Rob’s movies will last for lifetimes because they were about what makes us laugh and cry,” he noted.
Crystal said Reiner’s films also showed audiences what people could aspire to be.
To close both his Oscars tribute and his later reflections, Crystal leaned on a line from one of Reiner’s favorite films, “It’s a Wonderful Life.”
He said, “Each man’s life touches so many other lives, and when he isn’t around, he leaves an awful hole, doesn’t he?”
