On April 21, 2026, exactly 10 years after the world lost music legend Prince, Mayte Garcia – artist, author, philanthropist, and former wife and longtime collaborator of Prince – will lead the Live 4 Love Charities Glam Slam Benefit at the W Hollywood.

The evening will celebrate Prince’s enduring cultural and humanitarian legacy, featuring live performances, special guests, and more. Earlier in the day, the City of Los Angeles will proclaim April 21 as Prince Day, with the Hollywood Sign and city monuments glowing purple in his honor.

Mayte Garcia sat down with The Blast to share some details about the upcoming benefit, foundation, and Prince’s legacy.

Live 4 Love Charities, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit founded in 1996 by Prince Rogers Nelson and Mayte Garcia, is continuing to carry on Prince’s philanthropic vision a decade after his death. Rooted in his guiding principles of “helping people up” and “helping people out,” the foundation seeks to make a meaningful impact on communities worldwide. Through various programs and initiatives, Live 4 Love Charities provides resources and support that empowers individuals, helps to strengthen communities, and promote lasting positive change, all while honoring Prince’s legacy with compassion, creativity, and service.

Through Live 4 Love Charities, founded in memory of Prince and Mayte’s son Amiir, the foundation is able to ensure Prince’s legacy resonates far beyond music.

“We started this foundation in 1996, and it was privately funded because it was his money and he would go on tour and then he’d be like, ‘let’s donate.’ And he donated a lot of money to people that nobody knows about,” Mayte told The Blast exclusively. “He left me on [the foundation] when he passed and we just reignited it.”

On April 21, it will be 10 years since the world lost music legend Prince. Mayte is honoring his life, legacy, and humanitarian spirit through the star-studded charity event, Glam Slam Benefit. Held at W Hollywood, this event will feature live performances by Paisley Park alumni, joined by the Mpls All Star band, as well as special guests, Tommy Lee, Taylor Dayne, Sheila E, and George Lopez, with more to be announced.

Earlier in the day before the benefit, the City of Los Angeles will proclaim April 21 as Prince Day and the Hollywood Sign and other monuments will glow purple in honor of the iconic singer.

“I think it’s long overdue. His music was loved by all, so it’s nice, especially on the anniversary of his passing. That day has been really hard for a lot of us,” she explained. “I figured let’s do this with a charity and give back and help others and celebrate with his music and join together. I am excited because I got George Lopez to cohost with me.”

Mayte shared that having Lopez cohosting the event is something Prince would have really loved, because he “loved watching comedians” and he was “a funny guy.”

“He was a genius and the music is incredible,” she said. “But he was also funny and a very loving person.”

For Mayte, giving back is something that’s always been a priority. In addition to Live 4 Love Charities, she also started her own animal rescue in Las Vegas and works day in and day out helping others – both people and animals.

“It’s just so important this charity because it’s about helping others. And I love finding people that are doing good, like small nonprofits giving back, making food for people getting chemo,” she explained. “I am a support group for people who have a sudden infant loss. There is a lot, so much that we can do, so it’s inspiring for me and it keeps me going.”

She further explained that the charity she started with Prince began when she was pregnant with their son, Amiir, and the little handprint in the logo is his handprint. So for Mayte, this is all very “personal.”

Something Mayte is passionate about is continuing to spread Prince’s “legacy, his music, and the positivity that he gave.” She wants to continue to “share the love.”

Not Many Know All That Prince Did To Help Others

Something that not everyone realizes is that Prince helped people often. Mayte said she would see him “writing checks all the time.”

“I mean, helping homeless people, giving them cash while stopping at a red light,” she shared. “He helped so many people; people that he worked with and people that he didn’t, school, education, he was all about giving back. It wasn’t about spending all this money. It was always like, let’s take this whole concert and give proceeds to this.”

Mayte shared that she’s working on a documentary about everything that he’s given over the years because “it’s shocking.”

Over the years, Live 4 Love Charities has evolved and grown to help more people. In the early days, they would hold coat drives and other similar events.

“This was before it was even common and popular to bring food to a concert, or you know, a winter coat you’re not using,” she explained. “And our mission statement, it’s broad, but it’s helping people up and helping people out. We’ve helped homeless, we’ve helped children.”

One branch of Live 4 Love is Live 4 Music. According to the website, “To continue the Legacy of our founder’s passion and gift of music to the world, Live 4 Love Charities has created a program to advance music education for kids, called ‘Live 4 Music.'”

The description goes on to explain the focus of the program — connecting “intermediate musicians with established, professional musicians through Zoom tutorials, resulting in one-on-one instruction and collaboration.”

In May, Live 4 Dance, another branch of the charity, will be going to a high school and the children will be mentored by top choreographers and teachers.

When asked what issue or cause Prince would be passionate about if he were still with us, Mayte said she feels it would have to do with education.

“Education. He was really, really, really into education,” she said. “I think also, it would be helping kids find something that AI isn’t going to take away. I think he’d be for that.”
