Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s upcoming trip to Australia is already raising eyebrows, with royal insiders suggesting the visit could create confusion and tension.

The couple, who stepped back from royal duties, are expected to carry out a series of public engagements while still using their titles.

With planned charity appearances, business ventures, and a high-profile event involving Meghan, the visit is being closely watched, especially as questions grow about how their presence will be received.

Prince Harry’s decision to visit Australia alongside Meghan has reportedly created discomfort within palace circles, largely because of how the couple plans to present themselves.

Though they are no longer working royals, they are still widely associated with the monarchy, especially in a country where King Charles remains head of state.

Speaking to Page Six, Royal author Robert Jobson suggested there is little the palace can do to intervene, explaining, “I’m sure [Buckingham Palace] would prefer that Harry and Meghan weren’t going, but there’s not a lot they can do about it. They have no control.”

That lack of control appears to be part of the concern. Insiders believe the visit could blur the line between official royal duties and independent celebrity ventures, particularly as the Sussexes continue to use their titles while operating outside the institution.

Prince Harry’s trip is expected to include visits to Canberra, Melbourne, and Sydney, where the couple will meet with sick children, mental health organizations, and the Australian branch of the Invictus Games. However, the purpose of the visit itself has raised eyebrows.

“There will undoubtedly be a sense of confusion about what Harry and Meghan are there for … this trip may stick in the gullet of the palace,” Jobson noted.

Royal commentator Robert Hardman echoed similar concerns, pointing out the delicate balance the couple must maintain.

“If they are traveling as celebrities — which is what they are — that’s fine, but if there is any royal or official apparatus then that’s going to invite criticism,” he said.

That ambiguity is at the heart of the tension, with critics questioning whether the trip leans more toward personal branding than public service.

Prince Harry’s visit to Australia is not solely focused on charitable efforts.

His wife, Meghan, is also expected to hold meetings tied to her lifestyle brand, As Ever, which has reportedly trademarked multiple products in Australia.

At the same time, she is promoting a high-end retreat described as a “girls weekend like no other,” set to take place at the InterContinental Sydney Coogee Beach.

Despite claims that the 300-person event sold out, the website now notes that “a handful of additional rooms just released.”

Ticket prices begin at $2,699 AUD ($ 1,908), with an additional fee for a group photo opportunity.

The event has already stirred controversy, with journalist Ariana Pezeshki claiming her ticket was canceled, allegedly due to her profession, further fueling debate about the nature of the trip and who it is really for.

As one palace source bluntly suggested, “They yearn for the catnip of attention,” reflecting ongoing skepticism about their motivations.

Prince Harry’s arrival also comes at a politically sensitive time in Australia, where debates over becoming a republic have resurfaced in recent years.

Although a 1999 referendum resulted in the country retaining the monarchy, the issue remains unresolved.

“Things are all the more awkward because not that long ago, Australia was debating becoming a republic,” Jobson said.

The Sussexes’ presence in such an environment adds complexity, particularly as they operate independently from the royal family while still benefiting from its legacy.

Sources say they are not expected to meet with government officials unless invited, but even without formal engagements, their visit carries symbolic weight.

Prince Harry’s previous visit to Australia in 2018 continues to linger in the background, adding to concerns about how this trip may unfold.

That tour, which coincided with Meghan announcing her pregnancy with Prince Archie, was marked by reported tensions behind the scenes.

According to an account from royal author Valentine Low, the Duchess of Sussex struggled with certain expectations of royal life.

Reportedly, staff of the Royal Family heard her say, “I can’t believe I’m not getting paid for this.” In another instance, she reportedly told a staff member, “Don’t worry. If there was literally anyone else I could ask to do this, I would be asking them instead of you.”

There were also claims of visible frustration during engagements, with one observer recalling how Meghan turned and hissed at a member of her entourage, clearly filled with anger about something, and demanded to leave.

Those past incidents, combined with the couple’s current positioning outside the royal structure, have only heightened anticipation around this latest visit and why Prince Harry’s return to Australia is being watched so closely.
