Many a time, in the face of tragedy, people move on, but grief lingers, and Brandy Norwood is a testament.
The singer recently recalled how much she was affected after her world turned around in a ghastly vehicular crash two decades ago. The 47-year-old was not just left with physical scars, but the everlasting reminder that a soul was lost as a result, on that fateful day.
Brandy Norwood was faced with charges of vehicular manslaughter following the incident, which would have tarnished her name if she had been convicted. Much more than the physical or legal damages, she has battled with the mental strain, admitting that the situation changed her life forever.
Brandy Norwood Recalled ‘Deafening Impossible Silence’ Before The Crash

Brandy has sure taken her time to process and go through all the emotions connected to the day her life did a 360. Putting pen to paper, she recalled the events on that day in 2006 in her newly released memoir “Phases.” The singer started off describing the freeway where the crash occurred as a familiar drive path for her. She hopped in her car that chilly December morning, totally oblivious of what the universe held in store for her.
The car crash took the life of a 38-year-old woman, Awatef Aboudihaj, and Brandy had a hard time forgiving herself for it. In the book, she reflected on her state of mind in the time leading up to the accident, stating that although she was focused and her mind was clear, she did not see the car ahead of her in time.
Brandy noted that while her memory is quite hazy about all the details of that day, she remembered screaming at the top of her lungs before experiencing a cloud of “deafening impossible silence” as the cars collided. She also seems to remember Aboudihaj being pulled out of one of the cars and rushed to the hospital. The singer came out of it feeling the weight of being responsible for the devastating accident, but an onlooker told her it was not her fault.
The Weight Of Grief Stayed With The Singer Since The Incident

Aboudihaj did not die on the spot, but in the hospital the next day. The news of the 38-year-old’s death left Brandy with survivor’s guilt, forcing her to hide from the world after the accident. US Weekly reported that she also wrote about how she felt unimaginable guilt in the wake of the deceased.
“Guilt gripped my throat, squeezed harder and harder until breathing became a conscious effort. It was an accident — a tragic convergence of circumstance and human error. But a woman had lost her life. And I had lived,” Brandy detailed within the pages of her memoir.
She continued, penning down her emotions involving questioning her life’s worth. The singer felt like she did not have the right to sing, enjoy the good things of life, or continue living when she had supposedly robbed Aboudihaj of experiencing those same things.
In her words, “The grief never left. But it softened, it made room. I stopped asking it to go away.” Eventually, after years of blaming herself, Brandy turned to therapy, which helped her give herself some grace to move on.
The ‘Moesha’ Star Was Not Found Guilty Of The Charges Following The Crash

Brandy was slammed with charges and was set to appear before a jury after the tragic incident. In 2007, the charges of vehicular manslaughter in the four-vehicle crash were dismissed as prosecutors could not find sufficient evidence to convict the star. The authorities reportedly conducted a thorough investigation, stretching to consulting with some top accident reconstruction experts in the country.
NBC News shared that after all was said and done, the jury could not find the former TV star guilty beyond a reasonable doubt. At the time, Brandy was looking at up to a year in jail and a $1,000 fine if she had been convicted. The investigations showed that there was no evidence that the performer had been distracted by her cell phone or other sources.
Their findings also ruled out alcohol and drugs as a contributing factor to the accident, indicating that it was not a case of driving under the influence. Despite the dismissed charges, the family of the late Aboudihaj filed a $50 million lawsuit against the Grammy-winning artist for wrongful death, which was eventually settled out of court.
The Tragic Crash Left The Disney Star Dealing With Depression

In 2020, the “Starting Now” vocalist disclosed that she battled with severe depression after the accident. She shared that the state of her mental health was worse than she initially revealed. The depression stemmed largely from the aftermath of the incident and a series of failed romantic ordeals.
Brandy told news outlets that she was in an extremely unhappy place where she even considered committing suicide at one point. The List reports that ultimately, the performer drew strength to keep living from her daughter, Sy’rai, whom she shares with music producer, Robert Smith.
“I remember lying in bed super depressed. I [told] myself, ‘So, you’re just going to go out like this? That’s wack. You have a daughter. If you can’t do it for yourself, do it for her because this is not the way to leave a mark in her life,'” Brandy disclosed. The Disney alum acknowledged that if her daughter were not in her life, she would not have continued living amid the overwhelming struggle of guilt that someone lost their life because of her.
Brandy Norwood Suffered A Health Scare In Recent Years

“The Boy Is Mine” vocalist was rushed to the hospital after a medical emergency in 2022. Reports showed that first responders were called to the star’s Los Angeles home based on a possible seizure. The Blast reported then that Brandy addressed the situation, saying that she suffered from “dehydration and low amounts of nutrition.”
The singer noted that she had been ordered by doctors to take enough rest to recuperate but did not shed light on what exactly was the reason behind the health scare. Recently, the issue resurfaced when she walked off the stage mid-performance at a Chicago concert. The musician released a statement following her abrupt curtain call from her on-stage performance with Monica in October 2025.
Part of her statement read, “I sincerely apologize for the abrupt end to last night’s performance in Chicago. After weeks of nonstop rehearsals, last night I experienced dehydration and feelings of wanting to faint.” Brandy confirmed that she sought medical attention thereafter and was soon back on stage to continue her tour.
Hopefully, Brandy Norwood has now found peace within herself.
