Social media users seem displeased with Savannah Guthrie‘s brother over his remark to the journalist after their mother’s kidnapping.

Nancy Guthrie has been missing for eight weeks, with the investigation into her disappearance yet to yield any meaningful breakthroughs despite ongoing efforts.

Her daughter, Savannah, recently addressed the situation in an interview, where she recounted a conversation with her brother, Camron, one in which he agreed that her fame was the cause of their mother’s kidnapping.

Savannah Guthrie’s sitdown with NBC revealed more than just her personal turmoil over her mother’s kidnapping; it also exposed a troubling exchange with her brother.

According to the “Today Show” co-host, she called her brother, Cameron, just days after their mother was taken, and the two discussed what might have led to the incident.

During the conversation, Savannah said she had directly asked whether her high-profile status could have played a role, and her brother replied in the affirmative.

“[I asked my brother], ‘Do you think it’s because of me?’ He said, ‘Well, I’m sorry, sweetie, but yeah, maybe.’ But I knew that,” Savannah recalled.

The journalist added that while she hopes that isn’t the case, she hasn’t been able to shake the thought and admitted it continues to feel like a real possibility in her mind.

“We still don’t know. Honestly, we don’t know anything,” Savannah said, per Variety. “So I don’t know that it’s because she’s my mom and somebody thought, ‘Oh, that lady has money, we can make a quick buck.’ I mean, that would make sense, but we don’t know… To think that I brought this to her bedside, that it’s because of me. And I just have to say, I’m so sorry, mommy. I am so sorry.”

Netizens Criticized Savannah Guthrie’s Brother Over His Remarks

Camron’s response to Savannah’s question immediately sparked backlash on social media from netizens.

“Her brother said that??? That’s horrible! That’s such a heavy burden to carry. Yes, she’s a public figure, but that doesn’t mean that it was her fault bad things happen to people all the time,” one wrote.

“It’s incredibly sh-tty of her brother to have said that. They have NO IDEA who did it or why. It could’ve been some crazy person who didn’t even know who the family was,” a second commented.

“She shouldn’t blame herself for someone else’s actions. It isn’t her fault that someone took her mom. Her brother is rude,” a third user remarked.

Another said, “What a horrific thing for her brother to say. It’s not her fault. She doesn’t owe an apology to anyone.”

One more person noted, “That is a horrible form of survivor’s guilt and shame on her brother and any other family members who put this on her. The correct answer is it’s the sole fault of the kidnappers.”

Nancy was reported missing on February 1, though she was last seen on January 31 after dining with her other daughter, Annie.

Her disappearance was later ruled a kidnapping by Pima County Sheriff Chris Nanos, just a day after she was reported missing.

“We saw some things at the home that were concerning to us,” Nanos said at the time, per CBS News.

“I believe she was abducted, yes,” the law enforcement officer added. “She didn’t walk from there. She didn’t go willingly.”

The Guthries Have Put Out A $1M Reward Amid Their Mother’s Disappearance

Since the announcement, several ransom notes have surfaced, demanding money in exchange for Nancy’s return.

Her family has also made emotional appeals on social media, pleading with her kidnappers to bring her back and urging anyone with relevant information to come forward.

Furthermore, they have put forward a reward of a $1 million for any relevant information that leads to Nancy being found.

Much of the ransom notes received have requested payment in cryptocurrency, but none of them have led to an actual exchange or meeting.

Some of the notes have been sent by individuals attempting to exploit Savannah and her family’s desperation, but they have been careful not to fall prey to such schemes.

“There are a lot of different notes that came, and I think most of them, is my understanding, are not real,” Savannah told Hoda Kotb, the host of her NBC sitdown, per Page Six.

“I didn’t see them, but you know, a person that would send a fake ransom note really has to look deeply at themselves,” she added.

Despite dismissing most as fake, Savannah acknowledged that two appeared to be real and said her family responded to them. However, she did not reveal whether the senders replied or arranged any meeting.
