Sarah Ferguson has suffered another public setback after councillors in York voted unanimously to revoke her Freedom of the City of York.

The honor, one of the city’s most prestigious recognitions, had been awarded decades earlier but is now gone following renewed attention on her past associations.

According to the Daily Mail, the decision was made during a formal council meeting, where members agreed that recent revelations surrounding her links to Jeffrey Epstein could not be ignored.

The move marks a significant moment, not only for Ferguson personally but also for the city, which rarely takes such action against recipients of its highest honor.

This latest development adds to a series of reputational challenges Ferguson has faced in recent years, placing her once again at the center of a highly sensitive public conversation.

The Epstein Files And Sarah Ferguson’s Renewed Scrutiny

Much of the renewed focus on Sarah Ferguson stems from the release of documents tied to Jeffrey Epstein, often referred to as the “Epstein files.”

These records have shed new light on relationships and communications that had previously remained out of the public eye.

Among the revelations was a message Ferguson reportedly sent to Epstein in 2009, in which she asked him to “just marry me.”

The timing of that message has drawn particular attention, as it came a year after Epstein had already been convicted in Florida for soliciting sex from a minor.

It has also been widely reported that Epstein provided financial support to Ferguson over a period of time, further complicating public perception of their relationship.

As these details have resurfaced, they have played a central role in shaping the narrative that ultimately led to the council’s decision.

Council Debate Highlights Concerns Over Ferguson

During the debate at York’s Guildhall, councilors and members of the public voiced strong opinions about whether Sarah Ferguson should retain the honor.

Liberal Democrat councillor Darryl Smalley was among those who spoke forcefully on the issue.

He stated, “We now know, following the release of thousands of documents, that Sarah Ferguson too had a close friendship with Epstein, which continued well beyond his conviction.”

He continued, “We don’t expect recipients of York’s highest honour to be saints. We simply do not want them to be best friends of convicted paedophiles.”

Smalley concluded by emphasizing, “We stand with victims. We stand for the rule of the rule of law. We stand for decency.”

Members of the public were also invited to contribute. Gwen Swinburn addressed councillors directly, saying, “The decision before you tonight is whether to remove the freedom of the city from Ms Ferguson.”

She then highlighted broader concerns about reputation, adding, “Every day the phrase ‘The York family’ appears. Increasingly, it appears as the ‘disgraced’ York family. Not just in the UK but all over the world.”

She went further, warning, “That is what our city’s name is now attached to. It chips away at the reputation of this city – quietly and repeatedly by a thousand cuts.”

While acknowledging the impact of the decision, she noted, “If you remove the Freedom of the City you remove one of those cuts but you leave the rest.”

Historic Context Behind The Freedom Of The City Decision

The Freedom of the City of York is a centuries-old distinction, dating back to the 13th century.

While it once carried tangible privileges linked to trade, it is now largely symbolic, representing respect and recognition from the city.

Ferguson and her former husband, Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor, originally received the honor in 1987 as part of celebrations surrounding their wedding.

Over the years, the accolade has been awarded to notable figures, including Sir Winston Churchill and Dame Judi Dench, reinforcing its cultural and historical significance.

However, this is not the first time the city has taken such a step. Andrew himself was stripped of the same honour four years ago, following his own widely reported links to Epstein.

According to Labour MP for York Central Rachael Maskell, he was the “first to ever have their freedom removed” by the city, setting a precedent for the action now taken against Ferguson.

As the debate concluded, Councillor Claire Douglas, leader of the Labour group, made the council’s position clear.

She said, “As the people of York would expect, holding this status requires upholding the values and behaviours consistent with such an honour.”

She continued, “Those who continued to associate with Jeffrey Epstein after his crimes became widely known fall well short of these expectations.”

Douglas then directly addressed Ferguson’s situation, stating, “Sarah Ferguson falls into this category as the Epstein files have shown. I therefore call on council to support the motion as presented.”

The unanimous vote that followed confirmed the council’s stance and marked the end of Ferguson’s association with the honor.

It also shows the growing expectation that public figures, particularly those linked to historic institutions, are held accountable not just for their actions but for the company they keep.

Ferguson has not been seen publicly since December, and there has been no immediate response from her regarding the decision.

As the story continues to unfold, the focus remains firmly on how she will navigate yet another chapter of public scrutiny, and whether this latest development will have lasting implications for her standing both in the UK and beyond.
