Questions about the death of Joshua Allen, who won the fourth season of “So You Think You Can Dance,” can finally be put to rest.

The 36-year-old, whose tragic death left many in shock, marked a void in the entertainment world. The circumstances surrounding his passing left many unclear narratives, but at his family’s request for privacy, all fans could do was mourn his demise.

Joshua Allen rose to fame after beating tough competition in the popular dance show with no formal dance education. Since his time on “So You Think You Can Dance,” he had gone on to explore other interests before his sudden death.

What Really Happened To The ‘So You Think You Can Dance’ Champ Joshua Allen?

Allen passed away last year after he was struck by a train in Texas. After a medical examination to determine the cause of death, it has been revealed that the star intentionally took his life. His death was ruled a suicide by the Tarrant County Medical Examiner’s Office.

The obtained reports show that it was determined that the “SYTYCD” season 4 champion died of blunt force injuries he sustained in Fort Worth, Texas. Allen rose to fame in 2008 after he won the season, with the late Stephen “tWitch” Boss coming in 2nd place.

His family and friends told TMZ shortly after his death how much of a wonderful person he was and how he stayed true to his faith. They shared that “One of the last things he said was to keep God first at all times. You have to be real with yourself before you can be real with anybody else.”

Friends Mourned The Dancer’s Death

After the news of his death was confirmed by a close family member on September 30, 2025, they requested that fans respect their privacy at the time and have them in prayers as they navigated through their grief.

The news of Allen’s passing came as a shock to many, as he was just 36 years old with big dreams, career plans, and aspirations. A longtime friend in the dance community, Emmanuel Hurd, shared a few words about the late dancer. He remembered the champion as “a very honest, real person” who wasn’t afraid to share his own flaws.

Hurd also told outlets that Allen was someone who always stood out in the crowd. He “didn’t always do things the way that everybody thought he should, but that’s why he was a winner,” Hurd noted.

The Dance Competition Champ Was Full Of Life

Allen was vocal about his ambitions of being a recording artist, choreographer, and studio owner, with ambitions to run his own record label.

He marked his 36th birthday on his Instagram on March 16, sharing a picture of himself and thanking God for life. “Grateful to see another year….Cheers to another trip around the [sun emoji]. Thank you, God!!” he wrote. He also expressed gratitude to his fans and followers who sent in birthday greetings to him.

The Blast reported that Allen’s last online presence was with a post where he shared a picture of himself and the late Malcolm-Jamal Warner, who died on July 20 after drowning in Costa Rica. He mourned the late actor’s death, writing simply “Fly high, King,” in the caption.

Inside Joshua Allen’s Victory On ‘SYTYCD’

His face was across many channels as the 19-year-old who took home the top prize for season 4 od the dance competition. Shortly after his victory, Allen was doing interviews, sharing insights into his plans and challenges during the competition. During an interview with Entertainment Weekly, he disclosed that before doing the show, he had no formal training as a dancer but planned to take some going forward. 

“I took a few modern dance classes, ballet classes, because I felt that to be a better dancer I would have to take different classes, and, you know, expand my horizons in the art of dance,” he shared. Allen also told the news outlet that he plans to venture into other genres of dance, like ballroom and contemporary, rather than focus on his strongest genre, hip-hop.

He also hoped ti go on tour with top-industry musicians, dance, and even get featured on some tracks. When asked about his plans for the $250,000 prize money, Allen said, “I have no idea. I want to save [the $250,000 prize] and have it grow. I’m going to move out to L.A., of course, and follow my career.”

Investigations Began Immediately After Joshua Allen’s Death

After Allen was hit by a train last year, he was rushed to a hospital near his home in Texas. The circumstances surrounding his death called for intervention from the authorities. The Fort Worth Police Department received a call related to the train accident, and investigations commenced almost immediately.

Reports from the Fort Worth Star-Telegram show that the police reportedly discovered the late champ on the railway track near the intersection of Millbrook Lane and Nuffield Lane at around 1 am. The Economic Times previously shared that among the tributes shared to social media after his demise, his cousin, SaKaree Campbell, shared videos of Allen smiling and dancing on her Instagram, writing “RIP cousin.”

Some fans were shocked at the news of his sudden death, commenting under his tribute to Warner, they noted their disbelief that the two stars were no longer Earthside. “You both are gone too soon! Rest in Peace, Josh! A fan wrote. “RIP Josh!! I know you will continue dancing in heaven,” another added.
