Whoopi Goldberg Reveals Where She Stands On Relationships After Funless Marriages

Whoopi Goldberg enjoys the view from the solo section and has no plans to change status anytime soon!

The legendary actress revealed that after multiple failed attempts at keeping cupid in her home forever, she has decided to draw the curtain on romantic relationships, which are especially draining, and get the butterflies from other areas of her life, which require less commitment.

Whoopi Goldberg is a proud mother to one daughter, grandmother to three grandchildren, and a great-grandmother to two great-grandchildren. She was also married three different times, with her last marriage being from 1994 to 1995.

The media personality got candid with Interview Magazine on Wednesday, where she broke down a few details about her complicated, yet not-so-complicated love life and why it may never be in the news that she is in a romantic relationship.

Goldberg affirmed that the little time she has to think about other people has been consumed by her daughter, her husband, her grandkids, and her great-grandkids, alongside her co-workers.

Goldberg reflected that in the last quarter of a decade, she has come to the realization that not everyone is made for romantic relationships, and some people are just wired to have a good time with each other and keep it moving. In her words:

"I don't want to live with anybody. I lived with my daughter. That's all I can handle. I have lots of people that I love, but I don't need them living with me. I don't need to be sleeping with them."

She also spoke on the concept of her living alone and cohabiting with someone, with confessions that the former taught her a lot about herself over the years.

Goldberg is sure that she does not necessarily get lonely because she is surrounded by so much love, but that may not be the reality for others, as they have been taught to avoid the singular life.

"There are some people who are brilliant at it, but I think we walk into relationships with a lie and say, 'I'm not trying to change you.' But in fact, you are trying to change them," Goldberg continued in the interview.

The star referred to the content in her 2015 book, "Whoopi's Big Book of Relationships: If Someone Says 'You Complete Me, 'RUN!" that her views on cohabitation and monogamy are all pointers to why she would rather do it single. 

From talking about the polyamorous nature of animals to how movies and songs all paint an illusion of love painted over a rainbow, Goldberg noted that it is not all that simple. The actress added:

"It's hard not to want to be Prince Charming or a Disney princess because you think, 'Well, that's what I'm waiting for.' We don't think, 'Prince Charming has the flu this week, and he's on the can endlessly.' Or Cinderella. 'If she doesn't stop getting that period, I'm going to lose my mind.' She's really cranky."

Goldberg's decision has not made her a bitter ex, as she revealed in an episode of "The View" in October 2024 that she still keeps in touch with every one of them because, despite the new arrangement between them, they were once friends. "It doesn't mean that we talk all the time, but I will be respectful enough for you," the actress noted.

She continued on the show that none of her interactions with her old flames require her to sleep with them, eat with them, or do anything people in relationships do. Still, it is easy for her to be friendly because she has never been around anyone she does not like.

On another episode of "The View" in 2025, the media personality shared her personal story as a reaction to a discussion on Ben Affleck and Jennifer Lopez's divorce. The TV star confessed that while she was married, sex was never the issue; she was just not having any fun.

She then referred to a book she had read where the author claimed her divorce opened the doors for new experiences and great sex, likening it to her situation, that she was simply glad to be out of her unfulfilling marriage.

As noted by The Blast, Goldberg had said it on record in the past on multiple occasions that marriage was a terrible experience for her all around.

The actress reiterated that she was not interested in the emotional investment of marriage because coupling up with someone on that level required paying rapt attention to how they were feeling. In her words:

"I'm invested in my kid. I'm invested in her kids. I'm invested in my son-in-law. I'm invested in my friends. But I'm not invested in a relationship that would require as much as having a child requires, and I know that that's not for me."

Unlike her dealings with romantic relationships and marriages, Goldberg enjoys life watching her offspring just blossom and live life. She shared the pleasant news of the birth of her second great-grandchild with the audience on "The View."

As shared by E! Online, the actress proudly flaunted a few pictures of her grandson, Mason, alongside the newborn and the family dog.

Goldberg gave very witty replies to her co-hosts congratulating her about the new addition to her family, to which she happily raved that it was more about herself and the thought that she would be around for not one, but two great grandbabies.

On what her great-grandkids call her, the actress revealed that her name remains Whoopi, just due to the fact that she is not the grandma.

The talk show host was astonished at the arrival of her first great-grandchild in 2014, when she opened up to Jimmy Fallon that she had barely gotten off the high of becoming a grandmother when her granddaughter hit her up about expecting a baby with her husband.

Goldberg's reaction may have been shocking, but her daughter, Alex, had a much harder time coming to terms with becoming a grandmother so young. The actress shared that she had no sympathy for her daughter during her mini-meltdown, as she saw it as payback for Alex making her a grandmother at 33.

The star was visibly absent on the talk show for a few weeks, and upon her return the first week of last December, she spilled all the tea about what she got her hands on when she flew out to Italy and left the co-host seat empty.

In The Blast report, her co-host Ana Navarro joked that the actress must have forgotten how to speak English, prompting Goldberg to share her experience about Italy and how it changed her perspective on the world of soap operas.

Goldberg stated that she had never done a soap opera before, and doing it in a different language, miles away from where she called home, made it an exciting time.

While she was gone, the star made sure she stayed in touch with her colleagues by sending them pictures and videos to prove that she was working, even with the weather in Naples, which did not hold back the rain.

Goldberg had happily announced her gig on Instagram last June, declaring that she would be joining the cast of “Un Posto Al Sole.”

The actress explained in the post caption that she has finetuned her Italian accent and her character in the soap will be a part of a special storyline that will appear in multiple episodes in 2026.
