Rob Gronkowski Was Careful With His Money From The NFL

According to Spotrac, Gronkowski earned a reported $76 million during his time in the league, playing for the New England Patriots and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. And despite amassing a lofty fortune, Gronkowski hasn't touched a cent.

Speaking with the hosts of "Bussin' with the Boys," Gronkowski revealed he learned to be financially disciplined with his NFL earnings after receiving a $50,000 bonus from his agent.

"You've got to pay him back over the time, the first 50 grand you made," he said, adding that he took the bonus and bought a car and a place to live in New England.

Part of the reason for his "frugal" lifestyle was that the legendary tight end didn't know how long he'd be playing in the NFL. "I didn't know how long the NFL was gonna last," he said. "I was a second-round pick, so it was like a four-year, $4 million deal, and I was like, if I can play this contract out, I'll be set for life."

Continuing, Gronkowski revealed exactly how he's been able to keep his hands off his NFL earnings despite last playing in 2022.  "I just always wanted to save it, and I just used my money that I was getting off the field to just spend it on whatever I needed to spend it on. Technically, I have not spent any of my NFL money," he said.

While his earnings from his side projects during his time in the league haven't been revealed, he likely cashed in there, too. Over the years, Gronkowski has appeared in various television and movie projects, including "Entourage," "Family Guy," and an earlier season of "The Masked Singer."

And while Gronkowski has found a way to save his $76 million, former NFL wide receiver Terrell Owens had a different experience.

The San Francisco 49ers star's financial woes, including losses of more than $70 million, have been well documented.

During an interview with NerdWallet, Owens opened up about his financial decisions, hoping to provide future NFL players with the resources to succeed.

"My advice to any fan or athlete out there: Just don’t live beyond your means," he said, reflecting on poor decisions he made while attempting to fit in with those around him. "I think [jewelry and cars] are some of the most idiotic purchases I think players can do, especially when they don’t have that money in the bank account to really pay for that stuff."

According to a previous report from The Blast, Gronkowski spoke openly about his New England teammate, Aaron Hernandez, and allegations that he used to masturb-te during team meetings on an earlier episode of the "Bussin with the Boys" podcast.

“That’s a possibility, that one,” Gronk said. “I may or may not have seen it live. I’m not going to confirm or deny."

He added, "I mean, I love crazy sh-t though, so I didn’t mind things like that. I was like, ‘Wow, that was pretty epic.’ I was a wild man myself, so nothing fazed me.”

While he didn't get into too much detail about the alleged locker room misconduct, Gronkowski reflected on playing with Hernandez before he died by suicide at the Souza-Baranowski Correctional Center in Shirley, Massachusetts.

“We were the best combination at the tight end position of all time,” he said. “And that second year proves it. I mean, we had like what, 2,300 yards combined and like [24] touchdowns between just him and I, including playoffs and regular season. That's unheard of.”

Gronkowski also spoke about his former teammate's legal woes, which culminated in him being found guilty of first-degree murder in 2015.

“It’s unfortunate what happened. ‘Cause the talent was just through the roof. And if we could have kept our tandem going, we could have been just truly unstoppable," said Gronkowski.
