Dick Van Dyke Doubles Down On His Thought About Death After Turning 100

Death has got nothing on Dick Van Dyke, at least that is what the centenarian says.

The phenomenal actor is more than happy and grateful to be alive. However, it is no hidden truth that the inevitable lurks, but he has chosen to put away fear from the thoughts and focus on other things.

Dick Van Dyke celebrated his 100th birthday with a bash surrounded by loved ones, even though he had some heartfelt thoughts in the days leading up to his big day. He also released a new book, titled "100 Rules for Living to 100."

Dick Van Dyke Says He Is Not Frightened By Death

Van Dyke let the world in on some wise words while speaking about the reality of life and death. The renowned TV star shared that he is not afraid of dying as he knows he is already nearing his death day.

He revealed, while appearing on "Good Morning America," that even though the thought of death crosses his mind, he doesn't let it frighten him. "... although I'd like a lot more life!" Van Dyke added.

Furthermore, he shared that most people feel scared when it comes to the subject because they think the person dying is aware of what is happening. As shared by Page Six, the centenarian admitted to being utterly clueless about what happens when people die and has decided not to dwell on it.

Age Took Its Toll On The Entertainer And His Career

Last month, Van Dyke expressed his thoughts on aging and the challenging effects that come with it. He described it as a physically and socially diminishing, frustrating feeling.

He also revealed that travelling has become difficult for him, hence he had to turn down gigs in other states. Visiting friends in their houses is also a no-go; instead, they come to him.

Van Dyke also suffers from some physical setbacks with his feet, eyes, and ears. He has trouble keeping up with group conversations, even with his hearing aids.

"I have foot problems, and I go supine as often as is politely possible; my sight is so bad now that origami is out of the question…" he explained.

The longtime actor opened up, recalling when he had to make the decision to let go of certain habits as he grew older. His son Barry had made a statement that his father did not smoke too much when he was younger.

Van Dyke cleared up, admitting that he did smoke a lot but pulled the plug on the act when he turned 50, a decision he believes paid off health wise.

As shared by The Blast, he also let go of consuming alcohol by going as far as checking into a facility to find a way out of his alcoholism. To date, Van Dyke tries to hit the gym three times a week faithfully to maintain some level of an active lifestyle.

Saturday, December 13, was a special day for the legendary actor. His 100th birthday celebration was an intimate gathering of friends and family members.

His wife, Arlene Silver, kicked things off by leading a surprise flash mob set to a medley of her husband's most iconic songs. The centenarian was beyond happy and beamed with smiles.

He also released a new book, "100 Rules for Living to 100," which covered a humorous look back at his unique life and career. The Blast noted how the entertainer received much love and well-wishes from fans and fellow members of the industry.

A few weeks leading up to his birthday, Van Dyke had a moment to reflect on his years as an actor and a father to his four children. 

He admitted that juggling a successful career in the industry put a strain on being a present father. He shared that he struggled to make a name for himself and alleviate poverty from his family. 

Van Dyke shared how he worked various jobs, did game shows, and even played at nightclubs, amid battling to get three to four hours of sleep. Balancing everything was indeed challenging, and this resulted in him becoming the absent parent.
