According to a source with direct knowledge about Nick's situation, he has yet to grasp the severity of his parents' murder. They claimed Nick has not been able to fully process it due to his declining mental health, describing his state as being "in a fog."

The source noted that Nick is in a daze thanks to his schizophrenia and the medications he has been taking to stabilize his condition. They added that he is "calm" and "cognizant" as he remains behind bars without bail in a Los Angeles jail.

Other sources told TMZ that Rob and Michele's murder might have been influenced by Nick's addiction, alongside his schizophrenia. His condition allegedly worsened due to his substance abuse, and he might plead not guilty by reason of insanity.

According to two sources knowledgeable about Nick's condition, the medication he was taking made him "erratic and dangerous" in the weeks leading up to Rob and Michele's murder. His behavior allegedly became "alarming" a month before the double homicide.

Nick had reportedly been under the care of a psychiatrist for mental illness before later receiving treatment at a Los Angeles-based rehab facility specializing in mental illness and substance abuse. The facility was famous among celebrities with troubled children.

According to sources, "Nick was out of his head" after the doctors changed his medication, and his schizophrenia worsened due to his substance abuse. Based on these claims, it was likely Nick's defense would be to plead not guilty by reason of insanity.

"Not guilty by reason of insanity (NGRI)" is a plea entered by a defendant in a criminal trial, where the defense argues that the defendant shouldn't be held criminally accountable for a crime. LegalClarity states that the argument focuses on the defendant's mental state at the time of the crime.

However, using the NGRI plea is not an easy feat as the defense must meet specific legal criteria and have an abundance of evidence to showcase the defendant's inability to have been cognizant of their actions. The criteria vary by jurisdiction, but prosecutors are sure to fight against Nick's possible NGRI plea.

Before news of Nick's alleged condition behind bars, The Blast reported that his father might have predicted his death at his hands. According to an insider, Rob and Michele's Hollywood pals had hosted a memorial in their honor on Monday, December 15.

During the event, an unnamed A-lister shared Rob's alleged final words about his troubled son. The film producer, Michele, and Nick were last seen at a holiday party hosted by Conan O'Brien, where the late couple got into a heated row with their alleged killer.

After the verbal altercation, a heartbroken Rob walked over to a group of friends to pour out his concerns about Nick. He allegedly said, "I'm petrified of him. I can't believe I'm going to say this, but I'm afraid of my son. I think my own son can hurt me."

The siblings confessed that they were enduring "unimaginable pain" daily and stressed that no one should lose their parents the way they did. They thanked fans, friends, and loved ones for their condolences and support; however, they begged for privacy.

Jake and Romy stressed that it was time to stop speculating and embrace compassion and humanity while honoring Rob and Michele. Their statement came at the heels of Nick's first appearance in court, where he wore a suicide-prevention vest and had his arraignment moved to January 7, 2026.
