Kate Winslet has revealed the heartbreaking choice she never escaped while caring for her mother, opening up about the private ward decision that left her feeling “horribly conflicted.”
The 50-year-old lost her mother, Sally Bridges-Winslet, to ovarian cancer in 2017, and the experience has stayed with her throughout her personal life and career.
Kate candidly discussed how the loss shaped her approach to filmmaking, parenting, and honoring her mother’s wishes while stepping into her directorial debut with “Goodbye June.”
Inside Kate Winslet’s Difficult Decision for Her Mother

Speaking to the Daily Mail, Kate Winslet admitted she felt deeply conflicted when her mother had to be moved to a private ward at the end of her life.
While Sally had always wanted NHS care, Kate explained that the only bed available at the time was in a private ward.
She said, “When my mother died she did end up on a private ward. We all felt horribly conflicted about it.”
The actress shared that the decision left the family upset, as Sally had been adamant about NHS treatment throughout her illness.
According to her, that choice stayed with her for years, showing the emotional toll of balancing her mother’s wishes with urgent medical needs.
She described her grief as ongoing, noting that even years later, losing her mother still felt incredibly raw.
This experience influenced both her personal life and her approach to telling stories on screen.
Kate Relives Grief While Making ‘Goodbye June’

Working on “Goodbye June” brought Kate Winslet face-to-face with her own grief.
Playing Julia, a daughter supporting her dying mother, forced her to confront memories she had tried to set aside.
The “Titanic” star admitted that some days were difficult, saying, “It wasn’t necessarily cathartic, but there were days when I was literally reliving what happened when I lost my own mum, even though our film is fictional. And I would find myself strangely trying to almost hide in a funny way.”
She recalled sitting quietly behind the focus puller, Max, watching scenes unfold and quietly processing her emotions.
Kate noted that her mother’s death had left a lasting mark, and making the film allowed her to explore those feelings while also respecting the fictional story.
Despite the sadness, the experience helped her connect more deeply with her role and the emotions of the other actors on set, including Helen Mirren and Timothy Spall.
Kate Winslet Directs Her Son’s Screenplay

“Goodbye June,” which is set to hit Netflix on December 24, was written by Kate’s son, Joe Anders, during a screenwriting course, and the “Lee” actress decided to direct it to keep him involved.
She recently told Jimmy Kimmel that when the screenplay was ready, she could have easily given it out to another director, but she didn’t want that.
“I would love to direct it because when you give it to a director, it becomes theirs…But I didn’t want that for him,” she said.
Kate revealed she wanted Anders to remain part of the project and experience seeing his creation come to life.
She added, “He happens to be very, very smart about film, and having him there with me every day was just fantastic.”
Her close collaboration with her son ensured that his vision was honored while she guided the project, turning it into a true family effort.
Kate Took A Break After Her Mother’s Death

In 2019, Kate Winslet revealed how deeply the death of her mother affected her, leaving her unable to work for an entire year.
Speaking to the Telegraph, the mom of two described the impact as profound, saying, “It’s like the North Star falls out of the sky when you lose a parent.”
Kate added, “I just didn’t have anything left. I switched to autopilot and I couldn’t imagine ever working again. So, I had a year where work-wise I did nothing.”
This break allowed her to process grief and regain her energy, while also influencing her approach to both acting and directing.
Kate Winslet Passes Her Mother’s Lessons to Her Children

Kate continues to honor her mother’s values while guiding her own children.
In a 2021 chat with Mirror, the “Mare of Easttown” star recalled that she and Sally shared a dislike for show-offs, with her mother telling her, “Just promise me you won’t get showy offy.”
To date, the advice still shapes her approach to her work.
Speaking to the BBC on Wednesday, the actress defended her children against the label “nepo babies,” insisting that their accomplishments were earned and not a result of her fame.
She said, “Joe would say to me, ‘I don’t want people to think this film is just being made because you’re my mum. The film would have been made with or without me. The script is so good. It was the script that attracted all these wonderful actors.’ With Mia, I just try to say to my children, ‘follow your heart.’”
Winslet explained that both her children have carved their own paths, and her guidance focuses on encouraging passion and independence, rather than relying on family fame.
