Dave Portnoy Under Fire After Sharing He's Received Hate Messages From The Public

Speaking with CBS Sunday Morning, Portnoy got candid with host Tony Dokoupil about the influx of hate messages he's received recently, specifically about his identity as a Jewish man.

"Occasionally you get, 'Hey, k-ke' or 'Jew' or whatever. It's every day now. Like, there's a definitive shift in what's going on," he said. "So yeah, now, for me being a Jewish person, you have to step up. You're kind of someone people look up to in the Jewish community. You have to go, 'Alright, this is not normal, ha-ha with the guys. People are coming up with real hate.'"

For those unfamiliar, Portnoy is the founder of the popular media site Barstool Sports. Over the years, Portnoy and his company have made headlines for saying horribly offensive and problematic things about people of color and sexual assault. In 2021, Portnoy was even accused of sexual assault.

When Dokoupil asked Portnoy whether he saw a connection between his content and what people have said to him recently, Portnoy said he did not.

"Because I think Barstool, and myself, has always had a pretty good moral compass. So, we've never stood for hate or anything of that ilk," he said.

Portnoy continued, "I mean, do I think that feminists should complain about a Diet Coke can being skinny, and that somehow is, like, leading to an eating disorder by Diet Coke having a skinny can?"

He added, "That I think's crazy. And there are things that I think people get far too worked up [about], like he/she, verbs — like, crazy to me. Making jokes that you are trying to hurt people's feelings and are based in hate? That's never flown with us."

Fans React To Portnoy's Comments Slamming The Hate

Online, social media users reacted to Portnoy's comments, expressing genuine confusion about his stance, given that he, too, has made statements many view as hateful.

"He literally made a joke about b-mbing Greta Thunberg's flotilla a few months ago," someone wrote.

"This dirt bag made jokes about sexual assault and has also been accused of sexual assault," another wrote. "It's a joke that he's even given a platform to be taken seriously on this matter."

"The guy that joked about r-pe has suddenly found a line too far," a third posted.

"This is rich," a fourth user shared. "Barstool built their brand based off hate and stealing people's content. But since that hate wasn't directed at the head guy, he was fine with it."

According to The Blast, Portnoy made questionable comments about WNBA star Angel Reese in the summer of 2025.

Following her fiery on-court interaction with Caitlin Clark, Portnoy shared a clip of himself online, explaining why he believed Clark fans should "hate" Reese.

"Fever fans, Caitlin fans should hate Angel Reese. Angel Reese has been nothing but an instigator, agitator and jack-ss basically for the last couple years," he said.

"It's one thing after another, after another. … The jealousy that Angel Reese has towards her and has consistently shown makes Caitlin fans hate her. … When you have one player that's constantly poking at you, constantly degrading you, yes, you're going to f-cking hate her," he added.
