Sydney Sweeney Breaks Silence On Her Boxing History Amid 'Christy' Hype

Sydney Sweeney's latest boxing feature is a round peg in a round hole for her!

The Hollywood personality shared some gems from her past as a boxing enthusiast as she embarks on a promotional run for her latest movie adventure, "Christy."

Sydney Sweeney launched her October with a big win at the Hampton International Film Festival, where she picked up the Achievement in Acting Award. 

The actress hyped up her role as Christy Martin for the movie at the Pacific Design Center in West Hollywood on Saturday evening. Sweeney reportedly appeared very bulky at the event, having gained about 30 pounds of muscle, which helped her clearly portray the role of the iconic boxer.

Sweeney explained to the audience that her physical transformation for the role was one of the most challenging tasks she had ever undertaken. She noted that she had just three months to alter her physique, and it did not feel like a task, thanks to her upbringing.

The actress explained that she grew up boxing and kickboxing as a teenager and later as an adult between the ages of 12 and 19. In the TV star's words: 

"It was one of my favorite things to do. I was the only girl at the dojo, and I loved it. Then I booked Euphoria, and I wasn't allowed to do that anymore. So I was always kind of looking for something to be able to connect back to that physical side of myself."

As reported by The Blast, Sweeney recalled that receiving the script inspired her in so many ways, and she instantly started weight training every morning and night.

Throughout her inspiring career, Martins secured 49 wins, seven losses, and three draws with 31 wins by knockout. That is not all, the legendary boxer also graced the cover of Sports Illustrated in 1996, which declared her as "The Lady Is a Champ."

As for her personal life, she remarried Lisa Holewyne in 2017 after her ex-husband, James V. Martin, was sentenced to 25 years in prison for stabbing and shooting her in 2010, although the plan was foiled.

Martin's inspiring story had a significant impact on Sweeney's life, as she shared that playing the boxer taught her a great deal about herself. The actress added that she has now learned to be stronger in her personal and professional life through Martin's story.

"We both fight our own fights in different types of rings, and yeah. Check in with your friends. Make sure they're okay," she concluded. "Christy" will hit US theaters on November 7 and UK theaters on November 28.

"Christy" was produced by Black Bear in collaboration with Mirrah Foulkes, who served as the screenplay writer, and David Michôd. As stated by Deadline, the movie celebrates the boxer's persistence, humor, and humanity in the face of shocking turns. 

David Michôd also directed the project, which tells the story of Martins as a small-town girl in West Virginia who was content with her local life until she discovered her boxing talent.

She then drew on her determination and fuel to learn the techniques and rules of the game under the guidance of her trainer and manager, Jim Foster, whom she later married.

Despite her success inside the ring, the boxer continually faced tough battles in her personal life, including with family, identity, and a toxic relationship that had her life on the edge.

Sweeney's appearance in "Christy" not only earned her the Hamptons International Film Festival award, but she also managed to turn around the fate of her career, which had faced some crisis in the past few months.

As noted by The Blast, the audience testing for the project yielded very high scores from viewers who couldn't get enough of Sweeney's transformation and performance. Experts are also convinced that Sweeney's breathtaking performance could place her in the league of Oscar winners in the industry.

At the screening, fans reportedly felt a genuine and raw connection with her impeccable acting, applauding her for such a flawless portrayal of the boxer's story and life's journey. Looks like the worst days of Sweeney's bad media standings are behind her with these wins.

At the film festival, Sweeney was grateful to the organizers for recognizing her artistic brilliance and took pride in the movie.

The Blast noted that the model's dedication to her craft continues to dominate every aspect of her life, including her relationship with her manager. Sources close to Sweeney reveal that, beyond the romantic aspect of the relationship, the actress is glad to have Braun around with guidance and professional advice.

In light of this revelation, the insider noted that fans should not expect wedding bells anytime soon, as the duo will continue to collaborate on several projects, just as they did with HeyDude, Samsung, Baskin-Robbins, and American Eagle.

Nevertheless, the source affirmed that the relationship is more than casual and the couple is committed to making things work. In the near future, Braun may also give in to his urge to market everything and begin posting the actress and promoting her craft on his personal channels.
