Charlie Sheen's promotional run for his upcoming memoir and Netflix documentary continues with a candid reflection on his dark past.

The actor, once infamously known for alcohol and substance abuse problems, recently sat down for an interview about his controversial days. He recalled the moment his famous father made the difficult decision to report him to authorities.

Sheen reflected on his public battle with addiction in a new interview, revealing his family had staged an intervention in 1990, when he was 24. However, he noted he couldn't fix his problems then because "It's hard to ask for help when somebody else has raised your hand for you."

Eight years later, Sheen made waves for overdosing on injected cocaine and suffering a stroke. The near-death experience was the last straw for his father, who turned him in for violating the terms of his probation. The actor had been on probation for allegedly hitting his then-lover, Brittany Ashland.

Sheen noted his father's decision initially broke his heart, telling Good Morning America: "It felt like the biggest betrayal you could possibly endure." He claimed he "saw it as love eventually," but it felt like his world had crashed around him at that moment. Fortunately, he escaped jail time and got rehab instead.

How The Hollywood Veteran's Addiction Began

Sheen explained that his love for drinking began due to a problem he had kept hidden for years, his stutter. He claimed that being unable to pronounce certain words or make specific sounds pushed him to indulge in alcohol because drinking "softened the edges."

He noted it gave him freedom of speech until he stopped hiding his stutter in 2000 when he joined the "Spin City" sitcom. Sheen managed to stay sober for years and seemingly got over his need for alcohol until he joined the cast of "Two and a Half Men."

Sheen, per an excerpt of his soon-to-be-released memoir, noted he started using prescription pills on the show because he had different personalities to embody. "Sober guy for Chuck, friendly guy for my co-stars and crew, half of whatever guy left over for me, fear guy mostly," he claimed.

Besides making him infamous, using drugs also altered Sheen's sexual preferences. The Blast covered the story, reporting that he claimed in an interview that his sexual interest in men started when he used crack.

Sheen noted that he was initially hesitant to explore the new door that opened up from his substance use, but he eventually began to enjoy it. He claimed "some of it was weird" and "a lot of it was f-cking fun."

Unfortunately for the actor, he paid the price for his drug-fueled behavior when he tested HIV-positive. He publicly announced his diagnosis in 2015 and has since been on antiretroviral medication. Additionally, Sheen claimed he never passed it on to his partners.

Ahead of releasing his memoir and Netflix documentary, The Blast shared that sources had revealed Sheen's hidden side. They claimed there was more to him than his controversies and financial crisis, noting he had a big heart.

Sources explained that Sheen was extremely charitable during his heyday, when he made around $150 million as an actor. They claimed he donated between $26 to $30 million to various organizations.

The charities he supported prioritized important causes like cancer research, autism, and projects that supported people without homes.

Sheen did not make headlines for his charities because sources claimed he made the donations anonymously. They noted he wasn't seeking recognition for his donations and only wished to help others. His net worth has since been reduced to a reported $3 million.

Sheen turned 60 on September 3 and reflected on what the new age meant to him. The Blast reported that he felt good about where he was in life, noting he avoided the typical pains associated with people his age, like weak knees.

Although he felt great physically, Sheen confessed that he struggled with a bad shoulder, which he managed with Advil. Besides the pain, he enjoyed his 60s more than his controversial 40s, where he made headlines for the wrong reasons.

Sheen claimed he spent his time in quiet company, often meeting friends for coffee and spending time alone. He noted he deserved the peace after spending his 50s apologizing to those he hurt. He explained that he needed to clear his conscience before writing his memoir.
