Singer Matty Healy's mom, Denise Welch, is making the headlines after a pointed comment about Taylor Swift during a live appearance on "Watch What Happens Live with Andy Cohen."
In a moment that stunned the studio audience, Welch revealed she was happy not to have become Swift's mother-in-law.
Though she quickly reassured that she had no personal ill will toward the "Cruel Summer" crooner, her comment fueled speculation about lingering tension stemming from her son's brief 2023 romance with the pop star and Swift's album "The Tortured Poets Department."
Denise Welch Makes Shocking Comment About Taylor Swift
Appearing on Thursday's episode of "Watch What Happens Live!," Welch was asked about Swift's 2024 album "The Tortured Poets Department," widely believed to reference her past romance with Healy.
In response to the question, Welch shockingly threw shade at the Grammy Award winner.
"Obviously, on pain of death, can I talk about that episode, but not being her mother-in-law is a role that I'm glad I lost," the actress said, prompting gasps from the audience.
Welch quickly followed up, noting that she had nothing against the singer.
"Not that I have anything against her at all!! It was just tricky," the TV personality explained.
Welch Praises Her Son For Handling The Situation Well

Denise Welch continued, expressing her frustration about Taylor Swift's decision to go all out about what happened in the relationship, despite previous agreements to keep things on a low.
"She, listen, you're not allowed to say anythin,g and then she writes a whole album about it," Welch noted.
Nonetheless, the proud mom praised her son's maturity, revealing that he took the aftermath of the album "all in completely good grace."
In addition, Welch also stated that Healy was in a happy relationship with his model-singer fiancèè Grabriette Bechtel.
"He is very happy with his amazing fiancèè Gabriella...Gabriette, who is gorgeous," Welch shared.

In no time, Welch's comments ignited a wave of reactions.
On X, many fans believed her thoughts were rooted in hatred and bitterness, contrary to what Welch had previously stated.
"You can tell she's hiding so much animosity I know she wanted to call her a b-tch or something like c'mon girl say…get the swifties on yours AND your sons *ss AGAIN," one fan wrote.
Another quipped, "This is actually embarrassing behavior for her. Taylor has never publicly said a bad word about this woman. Taylor and Matt are both in new, happy relationships. Let them both be instead of being obsessed with your son's ex!"
A third fan commented, "Actually, MAAM Taylor dodged the biggest bullet of her life and met an amazing man who wins Super Bowl championships. Donna Kelce is blessed to have raised an amazing son for Taylor. Your son is a drug addict."
Another user wrote, "Can't even remember your about to be Daughter-in-law's name lol it's actually Taylor that dodged a bullet cause you just proved what kind of mother-in-law you are."
Matty Healy Seemingly Throws Shade At Taylor Swift

This isn't the first time in recent times that Swift has been seemingly dragged by her ex or his family member.
In June 2025, Healy seemingly threw shade at the songstress during a performance at the Glastonbury Festival in England.
A video shared on X, which captured the moment, showed Healy addressing the crowd at Worthy Farm in Somerset.
"What this moment is making me realize is that I probably am the best. I'm probably the best songwriter of my generation. The best, what do we say, A POET, ladies and gentlemen, is what I am," he said while raising a glass of beer.
Shortly after, speculation began swirling among fans, who revealed that the 1975 frontman was referring to Swift's album.
Taylor Swift And Matty Healy's Romance Timeline

Swift and Healy first met in 2014 when she attended one of The 1975's concerts in Los Angeles.
At the time, fans speculated about a romance, but both downplayed the connection, and nothing serious developed.
Nearly nine years later, their paths crossed again in early 2023, after Swift's long-term relationship with actor Joe Alwyn ended. By May 2023, the duo began spending significant time together. Healy was spotted attending several of Swift's Eras Tour shows, often seen in the VIP tent alongside her friends and family.
Paparazzi captured them holding hands in New York City and leaving recording studios together.
They reportedly dated throughout May and into early June, with sources stating that they enjoyed each other's company despite their busy schedules.
However, by mid‑June 2023, multiple outlets confirmed they had gone their separate ways.
