Olivia Munn Reveals Mom's 'Heartbreaking' Breast Cancer Diagnosis A Year After Her Battle

The actress recently revealed that her mother was diagnosed with breast cancer. The shocking news comes a little over a year after the "New Girl" actress had her battle with the deadly disease.

Now, Munn hopes her mother's story will further inspire women to take their health seriously.

Olivia Munn Credits Test For Saving Her Mother's Life

Munn dropped the news of her mother's diagnosis in an Instagram post shared on Wednesday. "After my own breast cancer diagnosis in 2023, I urged my mother and sister to take the Breast Cancer Lifetime Risk Assessment test," the caption began.

The actress revealed that her mom scored 26.2% in the test, and her yearly mammogram came out clear. However, Munn insisted she get an MRI due to the high score. Unfortunately, Miss Kim was then diagnosed with Stage 1 HER2 breast cancer shortly after the procedure.

The "Newsroom" alum shared that her mother has since completed 12 rounds of chemotherapy to date and will continue transfusions for Herceptin until fall.

Getting emotional about the health battle, Munn wrote, "From my mom being there after my double mastectomy to me being there after hers. From me having to find an oncologist, to my mom and I sharing one. I can tell you this: going through cancer is really hard."

She then added, "But there's something about watching a loved one go through it that is even more heartbreaking."

'The Babymakers' Star Was Her Mom's Caretaker

Amid the difficult journey, Munn was by her mother's side through it all. The 45-year-old noted that she spent "many nights" taking care of Kim when the "chemo became too much," admitting that she wished she could "fight the fight for her." However, she couldn't.

The mother-of-one then gave a shoutout to fellow caretakers, writing, "To anyone out there who is taking care of someone or has made it their profession to do so, thank you. These fights can feel near impossible without you."

Alongside the lengthy note was a photo of Munn and her mother at a doctor's appointment, as well as a heartwarming clip of Kim ringing the bell after completing chemotherapy.

Another frame also captured the sweet moment when Munn's husband, John Mulaney, visited his mother-in-law, among other special scenes. In the special tribute, Munn showered praises on Kim for her strength, writing:

"I want to say how proud I am of my mom. She's handled all of this with bravery and humor while still driving us crazy (just days after her double mastectomy she tried to do laundry and make dinner- she’s insane.)"

With Munn and Kim winning the fight against cancer, the former television host wants other women to have the same lucky odds. "The Tyrer-Cuzick Risk Assessment test saved my life and now my mom's. This is a free online test," she penned.

She offered tips for early detection, urging women to take the online test starting from age 30 as well as raise alarm if they getv a score higher than 20%.

The post continued, "All these things matter, you can't leave one off. My mom wanted me to tell you that she hopes by sharing her story, it will help save someone's life."

Munn credited Dr. Thäis Alibadi for life-saving advice, referring to the professional as "the guardian angel of guardian angels."

Munn fought her own battle with breast cancer in 2023, undergoing secret treatment before opening up about her journey in March 2024.

As The Blast reported, she detailed her gruesome health journey, revealing that the diagnosis came in February 2023 after she "took a genetic test that checks you for 90 different cancer genes."

Following a normal mammogram, Munn was diagnosed and wasted no time starting aggressive treatment. Detailing her treatment plan, she penned:

"In the past ten months, I have had four surgeries, so many days spent in bed I can't even count, and have learned more about cancer, cancer treatment, and hormones than I ever could have imagined."

John Mulaney's Wife Is No Longer 'Insecure' About Cancer Scars

Since coming clean about her health battle, Munn has remained an open book to her fans.

Months after completing treatment, the "X-Men: Apocalypse" actress gave a candid update about embracing her post-mastectomy scars. She teamed up with Kim Kardashian's SKIMS brand for an underwear campaign.

In the photos, Munn, who posed topless in sheer leggings, proudly flaunted the surgery scar on the side of her breast.

Reflecting on her decision to be that raw, the Hollywood star explained, "Every mark life has left behind on my body is proof of how hard I fought. I hope other women who have been self-conscious about their scars see these photos and feel all the love I'm sending."
