The news of Madsen's death came as a complete shock to those close to him, especially considering he had recently been given a clean bill of health.

Just days earlier, Madsen had visited UCLA Medical Center for a follow-up on a shoulder injury sustained in a horseback riding accident two years ago.

While he had been considering surgery for his torn rotator cuff, he decided instead to wear a brace, citing a packed schedule.

The same accident had also caused a minor brain bleed, prompting doctors to perform a PET scan to rule out any complications.

According to Smith, the scan came back clear, and doctors confirmed that Madsen was in good health. "He looked like he had been in the best health he had been in all year!" Smith told TMZ.

A Look Back At Michael Madsen's Storied Career In Film

Before his passing, Madsen carved out a lasting legacy in Hollywood with a career spanning over four decades, best known for his gritty performances and frequent collaborations with director Quentin Tarantino.

With his steely gaze and cool, menacing presence, Madsen had a rare ability to portray both volatile villains and rugged anti-heroes.

His breakout role came in 1991 with Ridley Scott's "Thelma & Louise," where he played Jimmy, the soft-spoken yet intense boyfriend of Susan Sarandon's Louise. But it was his role the following year as the sadistic Mr. Blonde in Tarantino's "Reservoir Dogs" that would solidify his status as a cult favorite.

The film marked the beginning of a long-running creative relationship with Tarantino, who cast Madsen again in "Kill Bill: Vol. 1 & 2" (2003–2004) as Sidewinder Budd, and later in "The Hateful Eight" (2015).

Reflecting on his unpredictable career, Madsen once quipped in a 1992 "Reservoir Dogs" DVD interview, "My career is like a heart monitor. I get involved in a good project now and then to keep things going … every movie you make can't be great, no matter who you are."

In the wake of Madsen's unexpected passing, tributes flooded social media from across the entertainment industry, as friends, collaborators, and fans remembered the actor's unmistakable presence.

One filmmaker shared a personal memory of a near-collaboration that never came to be: "Sad day. Michael Madsen was going to play in a film I produced. Our production pushed the start date. He had another film schedule and bowed out-hit happens. I wasn't able to work with him. A nice person, pro, natural actor."

Another tribute echoed the sentiments of many in Hollywood: "Madsen is the type of actor who they really don't make anymore, he's one of the biggest what-ifs in Hollywood history of an actor who had it but for reasons personal and professional never got there RIP."

Actor Vincent D'Onofrio reflected on their time filming "The Winner," an indie project directed by Alex Cox, where the two played brothers.

He stated, "Michael Madsen, a gem. Straight up in his performances. Honest as can be in his execution. Played brothers in the indie film The Winner. Dir by Alex Cox. We got along wonderfully. I remember appreciating every moment with him. His confidence was inspiring. I'll never forget him."
