Miley Cyrus Says She Took The Fall For Billy Ray's On-Set Smoking

During a June 19 appearance on "Sorry We’re Cyrus," Miley reflected on an unforgettable memory from her "Hannah Montana" days.

She revealed that she was blamed for something her father had done.

When Miley's mom, Tish Cyrus, asked about a "core memory" from the beloved series, she responded per E! News, “Dad smoking pot and everyone blaming me for it. It’s hilarious. He wasn’t sharing.”

Tish chimed in with her own memory of defending Billy Ray at the time. She shared, “They were calling me, saying, ‘B. Ray was smoking pot.’ And I was saying, ‘He would never do that.’”

The family continued the lighthearted moment by suggesting others on set might have been involved too.

Miley Cyrus Says NSFW Cake Joke Got Her Fired From 'Hotel Transylvania'

This is not the first time Miley has shared a revelation from her past. Earlier in the month, she appeared on Monica Lewinsky's "Reclaiming" podcast and revisited the fallout from a risqué photo that allegedly cost her a major movie role.

She revealed that a joke gift for her then-boyfriend Liam Hemsworth ended up derailing her chance to star in "Hotel Transylvania." Miley explained that the photo in question, one of her posing with a p-nis-shaped cake, was meant to be lighthearted.

She said, per E! News, “I, as a joke, got my boyfriend a penis cake for his birthday and I got fired. I was the lead actress in Hotel Transylvania, and they fired me and replaced me because I had made an inappropriate, adult joke.”

Miley, who was 18 at the time, felt the punishment didn’t fit the situation. “I was 18—so yes, I was fine to work in a kids movie, but I’m not a kid,” she explained.

She noted the irony in getting penalized for something considered normal in many adult social circles.

“What felt ridiculous to me about getting fired from a p-nis cake was that they sell p-nis cakes like for all bachelorettes,” she said. “Like in Nashville, Tennessee, you can get p-nis cakes, it’s not that big of a deal. I thought you know this is like a very simple, not vulgar joke, this is silly. And you can do this for all bachelorette parties, they make necklaces and cups and straws and all kinds of stuff.”

Miley went on to criticize the double standard that child stars often face as they mature.

“To be fired, you know, for regular things that girls my age—they go to bachelorette parties, and they go to Magic Mike shows,” she pointed out. “But if I was at that time, you know, I wasn’t someone that was appropriate for kids, even though that was in my personal life.”

Adding to the frustration, Miley explained that the image wasn't something she released herself.

“It was leaked after my backpack and camera were stolen during a party,” she said.

Despite the photo’s unintended exposure, she bore the brunt of the backlash.

In reflecting on how things may or may not have changed, Miley shared, “I don’t know if we put our Disney kids on the pedestal the way that we used to, our teen stars.”

She added, “But I think that still movies can have consequences for their lead actor or actress doing things that don’t align with the audience that the movie is made for.”

Though Sony Pictures has yet to respond to the claims, the role Miley lost ultimately went to Selena Gomez, who went on to voice the character, Mavis, in the "Hotel Transylvania" franchise.

June was a month of revelations for Miley, who also opened up about a wild phase in her life. While appearing on the "Every Single Album" podcast, she revealed the clever way she hid her drug expenses while working on her 2015 psychedelic album "Miley Cyrus & Her Dead Petz."

She shared per The Blast, “We called them vintage clothes,” referring to her coded way of disguising drug purchases. “And every time [my accountant] saw me, she’d be like, ‘Where’s that, like, $15,000 original John Lennon T-shirt that you bought?’ It’s like, ‘Oh, it’s upstairs.’”

Miley kept up the charade by saying, “They’re really delicate. I want to protect them.” With a laugh, she added, “So I bought a lot of vintage clothes that year.”

However, behind the humor was a serious reflection. “I’m so glad I survived that time in my life,” Miley admitted. “I would definitely not encourage anyone else to go this hard. But the fact that I got through it — I’m very glad I got to do it.”

While she's been open about her struggles, Miley ultimately turned a corner, embracing sobriety and growth.
