Jillian Lauren, the bestselling author and wife of Weezer bassist Scott Shriner, was shot and arrested by Los Angeles police after allegedly pointing a handgun at officers during a search for a hit-and-run suspect, authorities confirmed Wednesday.
The 51-year-old writer, known for her memoir "Some Girls: My Life in a Harem," is now facing suspicion of attempted murder in connection with the incident, which unfolded in the quiet Eagle Rock neighborhood of northeast L.A. on April 8.
Lauren, identified in LAPD records as Jillian Lauren Shriner, sustained injuries described as non-life-threatening and was taken into custody, but was later released after posting a $1 million bond.

As AP News reported, the circumstances leading up to the incident remain murky.
LAPD says they were assisting California Highway Patrol officers who were chasing three individuals involved in a misdemeanor hit-and-run. Jillian Lauren was not a suspect in the case. However, officers say that while pursuing one of the suspects through a backyard, they encountered Lauren in the front yard of her neighboring home, armed with a handgun.
Police allege she was ordered multiple times to drop the weapon, but instead pointed it at officers. While it's unclear whether she fired the gun, authorities say she was struck by police gunfire and retreated into her house, where she was later taken into custody. A 9-millimeter handgun was recovered from the residence.

“On April 8, 2025, around 3:25 p.m., the California Highway Patrol requested a backup locating three misdemeanor hit-and-run suspects, who fled into a residential neighborhood,” a press release posted on April 9 read, per Us Weekly. “As the officers were in the rear yard of that residence, they observed a female, later identified as 51-year-old Jillian Shriner, in the yard of a neighboring residence armed with a handgun.”
Scott Shriner, who joined the iconic rock band Weezer in the early 2000s, was reportedly not involved in the incident. The band is still scheduled to perform at Coachella this Saturday.

The arrest comes just weeks after Jillian Lauren publicly revealed that she was undergoing cancer treatment.
In a March 4 Instagram post from her hospital bed, she wrote, “I’d like to thank the Academy, my amazing hair and makeup team, and the lighting designers here at #glendaleadventisthospital,” referring to her care team at the time of her operation.
“Yes, I have a little bit of the C word y’all. I know a lot of us do,” she added, with a touch of characteristic wit. “I’m here to thank the incredible oncology team here, who pulled me through a complicated operation without a hitch. I am always so grateful for every second of the compassionate and excellent medical care I receive in my life.”
Jillian Lauren concluded the post with a nod to the emotional toll of the experience: “And let’s all breathe.”

A representative for Lauren has not made any statements, and it remains unclear whether she has retained legal counsel. She has not yet made a court appearance.
Lauren married Shriner in 2005, and the couple shares two children.
“My husband Scott and I had a long and circuitous road to parenting, including the whole painful infertility thing,” the true-crime author recalled on the Motherhood Later blog in 2015. “We eventually found the right path for us and adopted our son [Tariku] from Ethiopia.”

The author’s work has long explored issues of trauma, identity, and resilience, with her memoirs drawing critical acclaim for their raw honesty. Her arrest adds a stunning, and troubling, new chapter to a life already marked by complexity and public scrutiny.
Meanwhile, authorities say that only one of the three original hit-and-run suspects was located and cited.
The investigation into the broader incident remains ongoing.
