Selena Gomez and Karla Sofía Gascón had an unexpectedly tense reunion at the 2025 Oscars, marking the first time the “Emilia Pérez” co-stars came face-to-face since Gascón’s controversial tweets resurfaced earlier this year.

The encounter took place on Sunday night when Karla Sofía Gascón approached Selena Gomez and her fiancé, Benny Blanco, before the ceremony began.

Despite Gascón’s alleged 2022 tweet referring to Gomez as “a rich rat,” the pair managed a seemingly polite yet awkward exchange. Gomez, who stunned in a rose gold gown, stood to greet Gascón with a brief kiss on the cheek before returning to her seat.

The moment caught many by surprise, as it appeared cordial on the surface but carried undeniable tension given their history.

In "Emilia Pérez," Gascón portrays a dual role as a menacing cartel kingpin and the woman who emerges after the kingpin fakes his own death, transforming into Emilia Pérez. Years later, Emilia reaches out to the lawyer (played by Zoe Saldaña) who facilitated her transition, seeking help to reconnect with her wife (Selena Gomez) and their children.

The Oscars marked Gascón’s first public appearance in the U.S. since her tweet scandal, and while she attempted to avoid the spotlight by skipping the red carpet, host Conan O’Brien made sure the topic wasn’t off-limits.

During his opening monologue, O’Brien poked fun at Gascón’s situation. “‘Anora’ uses the F-word 479 times,” he joked. “That’s three times more than the record set by the publicist of Karla Sofía Gascón. ‘You tweeted what?’”

Though the audience erupted in laughter, the cameras did not catch Gascón’s reaction as O’Brien delivered another quip, “Karla, if you are going to tweet about the Oscars, remember my name is Jimmy Kimmel.”

The controversy surrounding Gascón began in late January when old tweets about Muslims, George Floyd, and diversity at the 2021 Academy Awards resurfaced.

The since-deleted posts, spanning from May 2016 to April 2023, quickly circulated online following her Best Actress nomination for “Emilia Pérez.” The award ultimately went to Mikey Madison for “Anora.”

One particular tweet, highlighted by the Latin Times, showed Gascón allegedly criticizing Gomez’s rumored feud with Justin Bieber’s wife, Hailey Bieber. “She’s a rich rat who plays the poor b-tch whenever she can and will never stop bothering her ex-boyfriend and his wife,” she reportedly wrote alongside a photo of Gomez and Hailey from the 2022 Annual Academy Museum Gala.

Meanwhile, Gomez, best known for her role in “Wizards of Waverly Place,” has remained graceful in the wake of the controversy.

In a recent interview, she admitted, “Some of the magic” of working with Gascón “has disappeared,” but emphasized her gratitude for being part of the project. “I live with no regrets and I would do this movie over and over again if I could.”

“Just having someone see something in me besides the obvious was such a special experience,” Gomez added. “The director [Jacques Audiard] just really trusted me, and I was so grateful because I’ve gotten to show people that I am capable of doing more. I hope this is just the beginning for me in this field.”

Although Selena Gomez did not receive an Oscar nomination for her performance in "Emilia Pérez," she did earn nods from the BAFTA and Golden Globe Awards.
