Gypsy Rose Blanchard Reveals Why She Was Nervous About Her Baby’s Gender

Gypsy Rose Blanchard is stepping into motherhood with a deep sense of purpose, eager to build the loving mother-daughter relationship she never had.

Ahead of the season two premiere of “Gypsy Rose: Life After Lockup,” Gypsy Rose Blanchard is opening up about her pregnancy.

The 33-year-old sat down with PEOPLE, offering a glimpse into her life as a new mom. Blanchard welcomed her daughter, Aurora, with boyfriend Ken Urker in December, and she’s embracing the experience wholeheartedly.

When asked about her experience raising a little girl, Blanchard admitted she felt “relieved” to have a daughter rather than a son.

“I kind of feel a little bit more relieved that we had a girl because I don’t know what to do with a little boy,” she said. “I’m a girly girl myself, so all the pink and ruffles and stuff like that, that’s my area of expertise.”

But for Blanchard, it’s more than just embracing bows and dresses and it’s about fostering a bond that she never had growing up.

“I think despite my relationship with my mom, I think there is something special about a mother and daughter’s relationship that I am so blessed to be able to live through with her because I didn’t have that with my own mom,” she shared. “It’s nice that I can just step into that role of a mother and see how it’s supposed to be.”

She is also looking forward to taking Aurora out in public. "We've had two or three outings so far. It's been cold lately,” she said. “So we have been staying a lot indoors, but with her being so little, I'm nervous just around people."

"It's Mardi Gras season," she continued. "There's just a lot of people, like the city is packed, so we're still trying to be cautious of where to take her [and] when to take her."

When reflecting on whether there were any positive aspects she could carry over from her own childhood, Blanchard was candid.

“My relationship with my mom does not come into my mind whenever I’m now a mom, and unfortunately, whenever it does, it’s negative,” she admitted.

“I haven’t even gotten to a point that I can honestly give you an honest answer that I could say I could bring that to my relationship with my daughter. There’s nothing I can think of,” she continued. “That’s sad, but that’s the honest answer.”

Blanchard has previously expressed her determination to raise her daughter differently. In a July YouTube video titled “I’m Pregnant, My Journey So Far,” which has since been removed, she revealed that she was 11 weeks pregnant and became emotional while discussing her parenting goals.

“All the things that I wanted in a mother, I want to give to this baby,” she said through tears. “I am a mother now, I am happy, and I just want to be a good mother for my child. I want to be everything my mother wasn’t.”

Blanchard’s mother, Clauddine “Dee Dee” Blanchard, allegedly subjected her to years of abuse through Munchausen syndrome by proxy, a rare psychological disorder in which a caregiver fabricates or induces illness in someone under their care.

For much of her childhood, Dee Dee convinced doctors, family, and even Blanchard herself that she was severely ill claiming she had leukemia, muscular dystrophy, epilepsy, and various other chronic conditions. These fabricated illnesses allowed Dee Dee to solicit donations, free trips, and widespread sympathy.

Blanchard’s fight for freedom from her mother’s control ultimately resulted in tragedy. In 2015, she was convicted for her role in Dee Dee’s murder, orchestrated alongside her then-boyfriend. After serving nearly eight years in prison, she was released in December 2023, one year before the birth of her daughter.

Now, as she navigates motherhood, Blanchard is determined to create a loving and safe environment for Aurora, one far different from the life she once knew.
