Kathy Griffin is looking back on her brief relationship with Jack Black in the 1990s, sharing a hilarious and slightly cringe-worthy memory about the "School of Rock" star.
In a recent TikTok, the comedian gave fans a glimpse into their past romance, showing a throwback photo of herself with Jack Black embracing on a couch.
A Towel Situation Only Jack Black Could Pull Off

“This is a picture of me and my then-boyfriend, Jack Black, who you probably know mostly from 'School of Rock,'” she teased, before adding, “So he was the first boyfriend I ever had where other bros thought I was cool because I was dating him. By the way, dating is a very loose term.”
Griffin went on to recall a particularly memorable moment during their time together, involving a shower towel, or rather, the lack of one.
After spending the night at Black’s apartment, she realized she needed a towel after showering. “I need a shower towel,” she told him.
His response? Not exactly what she was expecting.
“He goes, ‘You’re standing on it,’” she revealed, shaking her head.
Griffin then explained what that meant. “You guys, that’s straight guys,” she said. “He had one bath mat/towel that he used for both, and that was it.”
Despite the questionable hygiene habits, Griffin admitted she continued seeing him anyway. “So naturally, I kept sleeping with him.”
Kathy Griffin's Relationship With Jack Black
While Griffin doesn’t talk about her relationship with Black often, she previously mentioned it during a 2013 appearance on "The Talk." At the time, she shared how her late mother, Maggie, had a less-than-flattering first impression of Black.
“I remember introducing him to my mum, and my mother said, ’Oh my god, he looks like a serial killer,’” she recalled, per The Herald Sun.
Griffin also didn’t shy away from discussing their past in her 2009 memoir, "Official Book Club Selection: A Memoir According to Kathy Griffin."
“Another example of getting flack from the boys is what happened when Jack Black dumped me. That’s right. I f-cked Jack Black,” she wrote.
She further clarified their dynamic, “Okay, we went out only two or three times, but that’s a relationship in my book. And by the way, this is my book.”
Life After Jack Black

Following her fling with Black, Griffin went on to marry software entrepreneur Matthew Moline in 2001, but the couple divorced in 2005. She later dated Randy Bick, whom she married in January 2020 before filing for divorce in December 2023.
As for her current love life? Griffin still has a thing for comedians, though she joked that she recently lost out on one high-profile Hollywood romance. "I had my eye on Marty Short, but that trollop Meryl Streep got in my way. You cannot trust these Hollywood phonies,” she quipped, referencing the "Only Murders in the Building" co-stars’ rumored relationship.
How Jack Black And Kyle Gass Landed On Their Iconic Band Name

Tenacious D’s name has an origin story as entertaining as the band itself.
Jack Black and Kyle Gass formed the band after meeting through The Actors' Gang theatre troupe and bonding during a trip to the Edinburgh Fringe Festival. While their musical chemistry was undeniable, finding the right band name proved to be a challenge.
Before settling on Tenacious D, they went through several names, including Responsive Chord and The Axe Lords Featuring Gorgazon’s Mischief.
In an interview with The New York Times, Jack Black explained that the phrase came from sports broadcaster Marv Albert, who often described strong defensive plays as "tenacious D." The band took inspiration from this phrase, making it their official name.
What Does Tenacious D Mean?

Black later elaborated in a conversation with Grantland, recalling how the idea first emerged. In the late 1980s and early 1990s, he and Kyle Gass were dedicated fans of the Los Angeles Lakers. While jamming at Gass’s apartment, watching basketball, and getting high, they began brainstorming band names.
"We were deep into the Lakey lakes [LA Lakers] in the late '80s and early '90s, and we were jamming a lot at Kyle's apartment and watching basketball and jamming and getting high, and we were thinking, 'What would be the best name for a band?'" Black recalled.
"For some reason, we were laughing so hard at the idea of a band being called Tenacious D," he continued. "Marv Albert would say, 'playing some tenacious defense.' I don't know if he ever said 'tenacious D', we might have made that abbreviation for him. I just think we were really stoned."
Of course, an alternative explanation suggests a more unusual origin: the claim that Jack Black was born with a birthmark reading "Tenac" on his right buttock, while Kyle Gass’s left cheek supposedly reads "ious D."
