Dunne’s time at LSU has been anything but traditional. The college experience she envisioned as a freshman was reshaped by the massive social media following she already had when she arrived on campus in 2020. The pandemic was in full swing, and Dunne, a former junior national team member, found herself thrust into the spotlight as one of the most recognizable athletes in college sports.
Her massive following, which now exceeds 13 million across TikTok and Instagram, has brought both attention and criticism. Despite the pressures of constant scrutiny, Dunne has learned to embrace the spotlight. In a conversation with ESPN, she recalled a memorable encounter with four-time Super Bowl champion Rob Gronkowski at a Sports Illustrated swimsuit issue party, where he expressed his surprise at the amount of attention Dunne received while in college.
Dunne admitted that adjusting to the fame wasn’t easy, saying, "I was 18 years old when everything changed, and I felt like I couldn't breathe, I felt like I couldn't make a mistake. But something you learn on social media is you will get hate and you will get people that are bitter towards you, especially when you have success."
Despite the challenges, Dunne sees the spotlight as a blessing, particularly for the sport of gymnastics. She has used her fame to shine a light on women’s sports and to increase their visibility. As she nears the end of her LSU career, she is grateful for the opportunities she’s had and looks forward to making her final months count, both in gymnastics and in her advocacy for other athletes.
