The lawsuit centers around an incident on April 28, 2024, when Fulton and Weston were reportedly involved in what was initially described as a verbal dispute that turned violent.

At the time, Fulton denied reports of an argument, instead stating that Weston was experiencing a “mental health crisis” and that she was trying to get him help.

However, in July 2024, Weston was arrested on charges of assault with a deadly weapon and later released on bond.

Following his arrest, Fulton publicly stated that she had been “brutally assaulted” by her son and emphasized the urgency of him receiving the professional help he “desperately needs.”

In her legal filing obtained by PEOPLE, Fulton calls out Cage for allegedly failing to intervene despite being fully aware of their son’s history of mental health struggles and violent behavior.

“Weston has a long history of mental and psychological disorder and a history of committing violent assault and battery and harming numerous individuals,” the lawsuit states. “Nicolas has been aware of Weston's history and nevertheless failed to take action to prevent Weston from committing acts of violence and harming others.”

Fulton claims that the "National Treasure" actor's enabling behavior included repeatedly bailing Weston out of jail following prior incidents, drinking alcohol with Weston despite knowing his history of substance abuse, providing financial support, including paying for Weston’s downtown Los Angeles condo, which is next to Cage’s own residence, and failing to ensure Weston received proper psychiatric treatment or imposed any structure to help prevent further violent incidents.

The lawsuit further alleges that Cage knew, or should have known, that Weston posed a serious and imminent danger to others, including Fulton, given his documented history of violent behavior, mental instability, and substance abuse.

Fulton claims that during the alleged attack, Weston assaulted her inside his condo building’s elevator, lobby, and parking lot, leaving her with severe and life-threatening injuries.

Her reported injuries include a brain concussion, multiple contusions, disfiguring eye injury, dental trauma, PTSD and psychological damages.

According to her lawsuit, these injuries have required extensive medical care, surgeries, and treatments. Beyond the physical trauma, Fulton claims the attack derailed her career, which she describes as "thriving" before the alleged assault.

The "Dog Eat Dog" actor has denied any responsibility for the situation through his legal team.

"The allegations by Christina Fulton against Nicolas Cage are absurd and frivolous," Cage’s attorney said in a statement obtained by PEOPLE.

The attorney further argued that Cage has no control over his 34-year-old son’s actions, stating:

"Weston Coppola is a 34-year-old man. Mr. Cage does not control Weston's behavior in any manner and is not responsible for Weston's alleged assault of his mother."
