Kanye West Reveals Autism Diagnosis But Admits He Hasn't 'Taken The Medication'

Kanye West has revealed he was diagnosed with autism after his wife, Bianca Censori, recommended him to a doctor after observing him.

In 2016, the rapper shared his bipolar diagnosis after suffering a psychiatric emergency that left him hospitalized.

The Yeezy founder's latest revelations come after he and Censori caused a stir at the 2025 Grammy Awards due to her outfit.

The "Carnival" rapper appeared on Justin LaBoy's "The Download" podcast on February 4 and shared details about recent developments regarding his mental health.

He revealed that his wife was doubtful of his initial bipolar diagnosis after observing him and recommended another doctor who diagnosed him with autism.

Kanye shared per E! News, "My wife took me because she said, 'Something about your personality doesn't feel like it's bipolar, I've seen bipola before."

He added, "And come to find out, it's really a case of autism that I have."

Following the new diagnosis, Kanye said he gained a new perspective on his behavior.

He explained, "You're like, 'Oh man, I'm gonna wear this [Donald] Trump hat 'cause I just like Trump in general.' And when people tell you to not do it...and that's my problem, when fans tell me to do my album a certain way, I'll do it the opposite way."

The "Father Stretch My Hands" crooner gave more details about his diagnosis and how challenging it was for people around him to help him due to his behavior.

He said, "It's so difficult for them because this is like a grown man, you can't tell him. You can't take control of his bank account. You can't control what I'm saying on Twitter."

Kanye explained further, referencing Adidas's decision to end their relationship after his antisemitic comments. He said, "But a lot of what was sending me into the episodes—and it's hard—my dad and a bunch people said, 'You can't leave Adidas why would you leave all that money?'"

The rapper confessed, "The constant feeling of not being in control, spun me out of control."

Kanye also admitted that he wasn't taking medication for his autism diagnosis because he didn't want to lose his creativity.

He said, "I haven't taken the medication since I found out it wasn't bipolar, that it wasn't the right diagnosis. It's finding stuff that doesn't block the creativity, obviously that's what I bring to the world. It's worth the ramp up, as long as y'all get the creativity."

In  November 2016, Kanye suffered a "psychiatric emergency" after suffering from mental exhaustion and was hospitalized at Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical Center.

In May 2019, he had a candid interview with David Letterman on his Netflix series, "My Next Guest Needs No Introduction" and discussed his bipolar diagnosis.

Kanye said per E! News, "What I want to say about the bipolar thing is because it has the word 'bi' in it, it has the idea of, like, split personality. Well, that works for me because I'm a Gemini, but when you ramp up, it expresses your personality more."

The "Stronger" rapper opened up about his experience with his diagnosis and explained that during episodes, he sometimes feels hyper-paranoid, believing everything is a conspiracy and that everyone around him is acting.

He described the difficulty of explaining his condition, emphasizing the need for more understanding.

Kanye also highlighted the need to change how hospitals handle such situations, vowing to address the issue publicly.
