On Saturday, February 1, Gascón personally addressed the controversy surrounding her resurfaced "racist and controversial" tweets.
The actress discriminated against Muslims living in Spain and called George Floyd a "drug addict swindler" after he was killed by police in 2020. Gascón also criticized the Oscars in one of her tweets, claiming the award show looked like a ceremony for independent and protest films.
"I can't correct my past actions. I can only say that today I am not the same person I was 10 or 20 years ago […] Anyone who knows me knows that I am not racist (they'll be surprised to discover one of the most important people in my current life and that I love the most is Muslim)," she posted on Instagram.
However, fans quickly dissected Gascón's apology, highlighting that most of the tweets were from one or two years ago.
While reacting to Gascón's apology, one X user wrote, "10 or 20 years?? Karla, you made these tweets last year."
"There is nothing more lame and racist than using the card I have a friend or loved one that is…," commented another X user.
Karla Sofía Gascón Believes Her Detractors Already Won
Besides apologizing for her past statements, Gascón, the first openly trans actor to be nominated for an Oscar, also addressed those who dug up her controversial posts.
The actress stated that some of her comments were taken out of context and used against her intentionally.
"I recognize, through tears, that they have already won; they have achieved their objective, to stain my existence with lies or things taken out of context," she claimed.
Gascón explained that comments she made to praise her colleagues were being mistaken for criticisms, and jokes were being treated as reality.
Emilia Perez's Oscar-Winning Chances Are Under Threat
When the Oscar nominations were announced on Thursday, January 23, "Emilia Perez" made history with 13 nominations.
The French Musical dramedy, directed by Jacques Audiard, became the first non-English language film to attain such success. After the announcement, "Emilia Perez" was considered one of the favorite films to take home the Best Picture Award.
However, the film's chances of winning have dropped significantly, especially after the controversy surrounding Gascón.
According to Yahoo!, the probability of "Emilia Perez" winning Best Picture has dropped to fourth place in the Oscar odds market. The film also dropped from second to third place in the Best Adapted Screenplay race.
Meanwhile, director Audiard dropped third in the race for Best Director behind Brady Corbet, "The Brutalist," and Sean Baker, "Anora."
Karla Sofía Gascón's Tweet Targeted Co-Star Selena Gomez
One of the resurfaced tweets by Gascón that has gone viral is one where she called her "Emilia Perez" co-star, Selena Gomez, "a rich rat."
In the since-deleted post on X, Gascón quoted an article by Spanish outlet Reforma that detailed Gomez and Hailey Bieber's reunion at the Annual Academy Museum Gala in October 2022.
The news post featured an image of Gomez and Hailey posing together and was meant to prove that there were no issues between the two ladies.
In her tweet, which has been translated from Spanish, Gascón wrote, "She's a rich rat who plays the poor b-tch whenever she can and will never stop bothering her ex-boyfriend and his wife," referencing Gomez's ex-boyfriend Justin Bieber and wife, Hailey.
According to The Latin Times, Gascón reportedly knew she would work with Gomez on "Emilia Perez" when she commented on X.
Zoe Saldaña Feels Sad About Gascón’s Resurfaced Tweets
During her appearance in London to promote the film "Emilia Perez," Zoe Saldaña sat down for a Q&A session.
The actress, who won the Golden Globe for her performance in the movie just last month, was asked to address the controversial comments made by her co-star Gascón.
Saldaña declared that she was still processing everything that transpired, making her sad.
"It makes me really sad because I don't support [it], and I don't have any tolerance for any negative rhetoric towards people of any group," she noted, per The Hollywood Reporter.
Still, Saldaña defended the film's cast, explaining that their interactions have always been about racial, cultural, and gender inclusiveness.
Saldaña also thanked fans for still showing up for "Emilia Perez."
