Angelina Jolie is reportedly "devastated" after being snubbed for a Best Actress nomination at the 2025 Oscars for her role in "Maria."
Despite critical acclaim and Jolie's intense press tour, insiders suggest Hollywood politics and her contentious divorce from Brad Pitt influenced the outcome.
The Oscars snub follows Angelina Jolie's divorce settlement, which ended an eight-year legal battle with her ex-husband.
Angelina Jolie Reportedly Heartbroken After 2025 Oscars Snub
Jolie is said to be saddened after being snubbed by the Academy for her lead role in "Maria," Pablo Larraín's biopic of opera legend Maria Callas.
According to reports, insiders suggest Hollywood may have subtly leaned in favor of her ex-husband, Brad Pitt.
This marks another setback for the actress, who also missed out on a SAG Award nod after her exhaustive efforts to promote the Netflix film.
Jolie, who won an Oscar 25 years ago, fully committed to the demanding role by learning opera singing and embarking on a rare and grueling press tour.
She made her first late-night TV appearance in over a decade on "The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon" and appeared on multiple magazine covers to promote the film.
Although she secured a Golden Globes nomination, the award ultimately went to Brazilian actress Fernanda Torres for "I'm Still Here."
Sources close to Jolie revealed her deep disappointment, telling Page Six: "Angelina will be devastated … look at all the press she did for the film — she wanted to get nominated. She did Jimmy Fallon, her first late-night show in over a decade. She even went to the Gotham Awards. She did all these magazine covers."
Experts Weigh In On Angelina Jolie's Exclusion At The 2025 Oscars
An anonymous Hollywood awards expert told the outlet that the Oscars snub was a blow to Jolie and Netflix, the company that produced "Maria."
The expert added that Jolie is likely "undoubtedly upset" by the lack of recognition.
Another insider speculated that Jolie's exclusion might be tied to her highly publicized and contentious divorce from fellow Oscar winner Pitt, which was finalized last month after an eight-year legal battle.
They claimed that international media favored Jolie, while Pitt continues to be Hollywood's golden boy.
"This just shows that Hollywood is Team Brad," the source said, per Page Six. "The Globes showed that the foreign press loves her, but that's not Hollywood. Nobody was going to go against Brad and give Angelina a vote … people just love Brad."
The Actress's Oscars Snub Linked To The Spotlight Being Given To 'First-Time Nominees'
Another source noted that Jolie's Oscar snub may be related to the number of actors who received their first-ever nominations this year.
They said that while social "politics" can influence awards season, the Academy's decision to honor several first-time nominees over established names like Jolie and Nicole Kidman, who was also overlooked for her role in "Babygirl," signals a broader industry trend.
"The divorce is done, and yes, politics do come into play a little alongside the films and the performances. But the fact is that there are a lot of first-time nominees shows that we still have a healthy industry," the insider stated.
Angelina Jolie On Her Return To Acting And How Her Sons Assisted With The Production Of 'Maria'
"Maria" marked Jolie's much-anticipated return to acting after several years away from the big screen, during which she focused on directing and raising her six children.
According to IMDb, the film, which had a limited theatrical run before debuting on Netflix in December, follows opera legend Maria Callas (played by Jolie), who "lives the last days of her life in 1970s Paris as she confronts her identity and life."
In August, the 49-year-old spoke to The Hollywood Reporter about the valuable experience her sons, Maddox and Pax, gained during the production of "Maria."
"Mad and Pax were on this one. Doing AD [assistant directing] work. They've done that quite a few times, and I think that's good for them," she explained.
Jolie also revealed why she decided to return to acting, explaining that her kids' growing independence has given her more flexibility.
"They're a bit older, getting more independent. I'm less needed and so able to go away for different periods of time," Jolie said. "And they're old enough to join me at work. It's a new season in our lives. I'm very excited for them to be coming into their own more and more every day."
The Actress Is 'Exhausted' After Settling Her Divorce
Jolie's Oscar snub comes after it was revealed that she and Pitt had finally reached a settlement in their divorce proceedings.
The Hollywood stars first met while filming "Mr. & Mrs. Smith" in 2003 and subsequently started dating before getting married in August 2014.
However, shortly after their second wedding anniversary and an alleged private jet abuse incident, the "Maleficent" actress filed for divorce, citing irreconcilable differences as the cause of their split.
According to the Daily Mail, Pitt and Jolie put pen to paper in December last year, with Jolie's divorce lawyer, James Simon, saying the actress is "relieved this one part is over."
"Frankly, Angelina is exhausted," Simon told the news outlet. "More than eight years ago, Angelina filed for divorce from Mr Pitt. She and the children left all of the properties they had shared with Mr Pitt, and since that time, she has focused on finding peace and healing for their family."
