Billy Ray Cyrus’ ex-wife, Firerose, is echoing his loved ones’ concerns following his recent performance mishap.
The country singer’s a cappella rendition of his 1992 hit "Achy Breaky Heart" at President Donald Trump’s post-inauguration Liberty Ball has drawn mixed reactions, sparking widespread discussion.
Despite his attempts to push through, the performance left Cyrus’ family expressing concern. His son, Trace Cyrus, revealed that the family is “genuinely worried” about the country star’s well-being.
Firerose, who was briefly married to Billy Ray before a messy divorce, echoed these sentiments.
Firerose Claims Bill Ray's Behavior Was The Same As When They Were Together
Speaking to Page Six, Firerose said, “What’s being seen in public now reflects much of what I experienced in private during our relationship.” She added, “It’s very sad to see those same struggles continue for him, but I’m glad the truth is coming to light — for his potential good because healing is only possible when you confront the truth and accept there’s a problem.”
The 25-year-old singer, known for her hit “War is Won,” also shared a message of resilience, stating that she remains “focused” on her “faith,” “music,” “healing,” and using her “story to encourage others to find strength and hope.”
Billy Ray Cyrus Speaks Out Following Liberty Ball Performance
Cyrus’ performance at the Liberty Ball has since become a viral moment. On Instagram, he addressed the criticism by sharing a video of the performance, signaling his awareness of the mixed reactions.
“Sadly the man that I wanted so desperately to be just like I barely recognize now,” he said. “It seems this world has beaten you down and it’s become obvious to everyone but you.”
He also released a statement to PEOPLE Magazine:
“I wouldn’t have missed the honor of playing this event whether my microphone, guitar, and monitors worked or not. I was there because President Donald J. Trump invited me. I had a ball at the Liberty Ball last night, and I’ve learned through all these years when the producer says, ‘You’re on,’ you go entertain the folks even if the equipment goes to hell. I was there for the people, and we had a blast. That’s called rock ‘n’ roll!”
Trace Cyrus Says The Family Is Worried
Trace, who was adopted by Billy Ray in 1993 following his marriage to his now ex-wife Tish Cyrus, also spoke out, sharing his complex emotions about his father and recalling the profound admiration he felt for him during his childhood.
“Since my earliest memories, I was obsessed with you,” Trace wrote. “The day you adopted me was the happiest day of my life. Sadly, the man that I wanted so desperately to be just like I barely recognize now.”
“Me and the girls have been genuinely worried about you for years, but you’ve pushed all of us away,” Trace wrote. “Noah desperately has wanted you to be a part of her life, and you haven’t even been there for her. That’s your baby girl. She deserves better. Somehow, just like me, she still idolizes you, though.”
Trace Cyrus Hopes Billy Ray Will Get Help
Trace also opened up about the family's shared hope for Billy Ray to regain both his health and happiness.
“As I write this with tears in my eyes, I hope you realize this message only comes from a place of love and also fear that the world may lose you far too soon,” he added. “We haven’t talked in a while, but I’m over a year and a half clean from alcohol. Guess what? I feel amazing. I don’t know what you’re struggling with exactly, but I think I have a pretty good idea, and I’d love to help you if you would open up and receive the help.”
“We are all hanging on to memories of the man we once knew and hoping for the day he returns,” he continued. “You’re not healthy, Dad, and everyone is noticing it.”
What Happened During Billy Ray's Liberty Ball Performance?
The performance was plagued by a series of mishaps, including issues with his guitar and microphone, which left Cyrus with no choice but to adapt on the fly. Undeterred, the seasoned performer shifted gears and delivered the song a cappella, a move that showcased his determination and ability to engage the audience despite the challenges.
“Check? Is anybody awake?” Cyrus quipped, injecting humor into the situation and lightening the mood. Addressing the audience with a blend of self-awareness and charm, he added, “Y'all want me to sing more, or you want me to just get the hell off the stage?”
As his family and ex-wife voice their concerns, it remains to be seen whether this public scrutiny will prompt changes for the country music icon.
