Rae opened up about her transformation from the “girl next door” to a daring and provocative artist, sharing insights into her evolving career and personal growth.

Addison Rae: From TikTok Star To Pop Artist

Rae, 24, first captivated audiences in 2019, rising to fame on TikTok. Since then, she has evolved into a multifaceted entertainer, starring in films like “He’s All That” and “Thanksgiving” and venturing into music. In her Rolling Stone interview with Brittany Spanos, Rae reflected on using TikTok as a springboard to pursue her lifelong dreams.

“Even though it was still at such a small scale, I thought, ‘This is how I’m going to be able to do what I’ve always wanted to do,’” Rae explained.

Rae revealed she’s embracing a more daring persona as she builds her music career. “I’ll be your girl next door, but maybe there’s a wild side to the girl next door,” she said.

This bold transformation has been evident in her recent music, including hits like “Diet Pepsi” and “Aquamarine.” Collaborating with Charli XCX on a remix of “Von Dutch” helped solidify her transition into pop stardom. Charli praised Rae’s artistry, saying, “Everything she does relates back to her art — it’s all part of the world-building.”

While Rae has faced criticism for her debut single, 2023’s “Obsessed,” she’s learned to embrace feedback. “I think there’s room for constructive criticism,” she shared. “But it almost wasn’t even about the song. It was [about] me doing it.”

Legendary producer Max Martin encouraged her to delve deeper into personal experiences in her music. “He said, ‘The only way you’re going to really push yourself [is] to say things that are true and real,’” Rae recalled.

Rae also reflected on the challenges of bringing her family into the spotlight, expressing guilt over the intense scrutiny they’ve faced. “I feel a lot of guilt for what my family experienced, and responsibility,” she admitted.

On her ex-boyfriend Bryce Hall, Rae maintained a gracious perspective. “I believe there’s good in everyone, so I like to think there’s a good part of him,” she said.

As TikTok faces potential bans, Rae remains optimistic about her career.

“TikTok gave me a lot, so it would be really sad to [see it] go,” she said. “But hopefully, the things I create and put out surpass that platform.”

In her Rolling Stone feature, Rae expressed gratitude for the opportunity to share her story and showcase her evolving artistry.

“Feeling very transformative and naked. In the best way, of course,” she wrote on Instagram. “I am so blessed.”
