Aubrey Plaza And Jeff Baena Tie The Knot

Plaza and Baena began their relationship in 2011 and remained together until his untimely passing in January 2025. The couple tied the knot in 2020 during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, celebrating their love in an intimate and uniquely personal ceremony.

“I created a very quick love altar in our yard. Facts of our love, little stones, smoke, fire. Things of that nature,” Plaza shared in an interview with Ellen DeGeneres. “Then the man from Alhambra showed up in a Hawaiian shirt with a briefcase [to perform the ceremony]. … I can’t remember a lot of it, it was fuzzy. But I’m pretty sure it’s legal.”

However, despite their evident love and devotion to each other, not all of Plaza’s fans supported the union. In a 2022 profile with Cosmopolitan, Plaza revealed the darker side of the public’s reaction to their marriage.

“Oh my god. Jeff got death threats in his DMs,” Plaza shared. “People project so much stuff onto marriage, but it wasn’t some big statement I’m trying to make where I want everybody to react to it.”

Many of these intense reactions reportedly stemmed from some of Plaza's bisexual fans mourning her transition from singlehood to married life.

A Look Back At Jeff Baena's Career

Baena was not just Plaza's husband but an accomplished filmmaker, screenwriter, and director in his own right. After graduating from NYU’s Tisch School of the Arts, he relocated to Los Angeles to launch his career. He worked alongside industry titans like Robert Zemeckis and David O. Russell, contributing to films such as "I Heart Huckabees" and "Meet the Fockers" in 2004.

In 2014, Baena made his directorial debut with "Life After Beth," a dark comedy that starred Plaza herself. This marked the beginning of a creative collaboration between the two that would continue through "The Little Hours," "Horse Girl," and finally, "Spin Me Round" in 2022.

Remembering The Late Director

Baena is survived by Plaza, his parents, stepparents, and siblings.

As of now, Aubrey Plaza has not publicly commented on her husband’s passing, and fans around the world have expressed their condolences and support for the actress during this heartbreaking time.

However, a statement has been provided to Deadline on Saturday said that “the family is devastated and asks for privacy at this difficult time.”
