Hollywood's former power couple Jodie Turner-Smith and Joshua Jackson have hit an unexpected snag in their separation.
The estranged spouses appeared to have an amicable understanding of their divorce, agreeing to be co-parents and enforcing their prenuptial agreement. However, things have since changed, with the "Anne Boleyn" actress pushing for financial support.
Jodie Turner-Smith recently filed a request for spousal and child support, claiming her once-beloved husband had vowed to care for her needs even if they split. While Joshua Jackson has yet to respond to her claims, she says he's trying to dodge the promises he made.
Jodie Turner-Smith Wants Financial Support After Initially Refusing
According to court documents, Turner-Smith and her attorney, Laura Wasser, are pushing for Jackson to start paying bills before the duo's divorce is finalized. The entertainer argued that Jackson should pay $8,543 in child support for their minor daughter, Juno.
As for her needs, Turner-Smith requested $28,641 in spousal support, noting she required the sum at least while the divorce case was pending. She initially asked the court to terminate its ability to award her and Jackson spousal support when she filed to end her longtime marriage in October 2023.
Turner-Smith stressed that she could no longer hold the same stance because her ex dragged things out and increased her legal expenses. She claimed her efforts to keep their split amicable were not reciprocated; therefore, she wished to collect on Jackson's promises, per TMZ.
The Actress Claims Joshua Jackson Vowed To Support Her Financially
According to Turner-Smith, Jackson's refusal to cooperate has made it impossible for her to cater to her needs and that of their daughter. She noted that he made more money than her in Hollywood during their marriage, allowing him to drag out their divorce without worrying about the legal expenses.
On that note, Turner-Smith highlighted Jackson's alleged vow of financial support, claiming he "promised to always support me and ensured me that I would not have to worry about financial security for our daughter if we ever separated."
She claimed he made this vow "because he said he understood how difficult life can be as a Black woman and a single mother." However, Jackson's perspective has changed. Turner-Smith noted that he no longer wished to honor his words and asked her to settle.
The 'Dawson's Creek' Star Allegedly Offered An Unfair Settlement
Turner-Smith alleged that Jackson not only went back on his promise but also tried to make her accept an unfair settlement. She noted the agreement he offered was less than what she believed she deserved as his former wife and mother of his child.
Besides seeking spousal and child support, the "White Noise" actress also implored the court to order Jackson to pay $250,000 for her attorney fees and forensic accounting costs. Earlier this year, The Blast reported that Turner-Smith had addressed her decision to file for divorce in an emotional interview.
"Sometimes things we really want to work just don't end up working, and that's OK. The most important thing is that you choose what's healthiest for you and your family and definitely your children," she explained, noting it was necessary to prioritize one's happiness.
Did Something Bad Happen In The Pair's Marriage?
Turner-Smith did not directly address what sparked the end of her marriage but implied something had happened behind the scenes. She stated that it was necessary to stop and ask yourself if you were truly happy.
If the answer was no, Turner-Smith said: "Then you have to make a move because I believe that there are visible scars from staying in places that are not good for us. And they don't just affect us; they affect everybody around us." She added:
"The bravest thing in the world is to recognize when something's not working and to make a move, and I always want to set that kind of example for my daughter."
Inside Jodie Turner-Smith And Joshua Jackson's Relationship
Turner-Smith and Jackson's relationship began as a whirlwind romance, resulting in an engagement just months after meeting at the actor's birthday party in 2018. A year later, they obtained a wedding license from the Beverly Hills Courthouse and welcomed their daughter in 2020.
Their marriage faced its first public sign of a rift in September 2022 when they reportedly unfollowed each other on Instagram. It was unclear what sparked this incident, but the drama was short-lived as they soon reconciled and flaunted their PDA at various events.
Turner-Smith and Jackson even posed affectionately for pictures at a September 2023 event in New York, a month before the actress shocked fans with her divorce filing.
Sources claimed the actor was shocked and "heartbroken" by her actions as he "always thought that he would be married and grow old with his family."
