In 2018, Amber Heard wrote an op-ed for The Washington Post discussing her experiences with domestic abuse. Although she did not name Johnny Depp, he filed a $50 million defamation lawsuit against her in 2019, claiming the article damaged his reputation. Heard countersued for $100 million, alleging defamation based on statements made by Depp's attorney.

The trial began in April 2022 in Fairfax County, Virginia, and concluded in June 2022. The jury ruled that Heard’s op-ed contained false statements that defamed Depp with actual malice. Depp was awarded $10 million in compensatory damages and $5 million in punitive damages, later reduced to $350,000 under Virginia state law.

For Heard’s counterclaim, the jury found that one of Depp’s attorney’s statements was defamatory, awarding her $2 million in compensatory damages but no punitive damages.

With the trial behind her, Amber Heard expressed her intentions to focus on her family during a June 2022 interview with NBC News’ Savannah Guthrie, shortly after the verdict.

"I get to be a mom, like, full-time, you know? Where I'm not having to juggle calls with lawyers," she said at the time, to which Guthrie then said, "One day you may want to tell your daughter about this or have to tell your daughter about everything that you've gone through. What would you want to say?"

"I think no matter what," Heard replied. "It will mean something. I did the right thing. I did everything I could to stand up for myself and the truth."
