"Last Week Tonight" host John Oliver spoke at length about the results of the United States Presidential Election on Sunday night.
After endorsing Vice President Kamala Harris for President last week, the HBO host seemed both shocked and disappointed that the victory went to former President Donald Trump.
Audience Boos Donald Trump's Election Victory
At the top of the episode, John Oliver stated that "Trump won re-election" on Tuesday. The statement was met with a chorus of boos from the audience.
"Which is, to put it mildly, not what I was personally hoping would happen," Oliver continued. "And honestly, in Trump’s victory speech, he couldn’t seem to believe it either.”
Donald Trump Asks 'Is This Crazy?' Following Election Victory
He then played a brief clip of Trump's victory speech, where he said, “We overcame obstacles that nobody thought possible, and it is now clear that we’ve achieved the most incredible political thing."
Trump then exclaimed, “Look what happened. Is this crazy?”
The video clip ended and returned to a shot of a deadpan Oliver who quipped, “Yeah, it is crazy. It’s really f-cking crazy."
"He’s basically one sentence away from saying, ‘I mean, you guys saw what I did, right? And you still voted for this," Oliver added. "That doesn’t make any sense.'”
John Oliver Criticizes Donald Trump's 'Shambling Verbal Mess'
The HBO host then went on to criticize Donald Trump's manner of speech, which the former President had previously referred to as "the weave."
“I know being a shambling verbal mess is part of Trump’s brand, but it is still incredible to see an incoming president ad-lib a victory speech with the same energy as the best man who didn’t realize he had to give a toast," Oliver said before launching into a small bit:
"What a beautiful day. What, what a beautiful beauty today. My brother and his girlfriend — wife, sorry — today they… they did the thing you all saw it. I thought my part was done with the bachelor party, but here we go. Marriage is crazy, right? It’s crazy."
He then admitted that it was been a "rough week," not only for him, but for millions across the country that were disappointed in the election results.
John Oliver Calls Out Hello Kitty Over Election Day Tweet
John Oliver noted that "the tiniest moments this week, where the world was going on like nothing had happened could be suddenly enraging.” He called out the Hello Kitty brand in particular, explaining how they shared a word search puzzle on X with the caption, “Checking in … What are you looking forward to this month?”
“Hey, Hello Kitty — not f-cking now,” Oliver snapped, which elicited laughter from the audience. “I would love to tell you what I’m looking forward to, but I cannot seem to find ‘drinking my lights out and [having] some grief mac and cheese’ on your stupid puzzle. Get the f-ck out of here.”
John Oliver Shares Advice To Those Struggling With The Election Results
Later on in the episode, John Oliver addressed the disappointed Kamala Harris fans who were hoping to elect the first female President in the nation's history.
After noting that it will be "very depressing" to see Donald Trump get sworn in for a second term, Oliver encouraged his audience to do "whatever you want" over the next few days. "I am not gonna judge you for how you get through the next week for two reasons. One, I’m not gonna see it. I am in the TV. This is far away from where you actually are," he joked.
“And two, because there is no right reaction right now; lots of us are grieving and grief has stages. We take different amounts of time for different people," he continued. "The stage I’m currently locked in is anger. I am mad for trans people who’ve been threatened. I’m disgusted at the prospect of mass deportation. I’m furious at Biden for not dropping out earlier, and that the egos and inaction of two men older than credit cards themselves have led us to this point."
"I’m mad that women have to hear ‘your body, my choice’ from right-wing dipsh-ts. I’m mad that Elon Musk is apparently sitting in on meetings with the president of Ukraine," he went on.
"I’m mad about the myriad of damage Trump will do that cannot easily be undone like setting back efforts to fight climate change and appointing more Supreme Court justices. And I’m mad at the prospect of four more years of people saying, ‘So is your job like so much easier with Trump as president?’ No, it is not!" he concluded. "No, it f-cking isn’t! F-ck you so much!”
John Oliver's comments were first reported by The Hollywood Reporter.
