Gabrielle Union Blasts Florida's 'Don't Say Gay' Bill
In early 2022, the Walt Disney Company and its then-CEO, Bob Chapek, faced significant backlash for their initial decision to remain neutral on Florida's Parental Rights in Education Act, commonly referred to as the "Don't Say Gay" bill.
This legislation sought to restrict discussions of sexual orientation and gender identity in primary school classrooms. Disney's neutrality was met with criticism from employees, LGBTQ+ advocates, and the public, who expected the company to oppose the bill, given its longstanding support for LGBTQ+ rights.
Gabrielle Union openly criticized the Walt Disney Company, expressing her disappointment over the issue. “Somebody asked me, ‘Are you disappointed?’ I’m disappointed when my order isn’t right at In-N-Out," she told Variety. "I don’t even think that’s a word that you could use for something like this, where children’s lives are literally hanging in the balance."
She added, "We need to own that if you truly are taking [a stand] against hate and oppression, you should not fund hate and oppression. Period. The damage is done.”
In response to the mounting pressure, Chapek issued an apology to Disney staff, acknowledging the company's silence and announcing a pause on all political donations in Florida.
Gabrielle Union Comments On Donald Trump’s 'Access Hollywood' Tapes
The Access Hollywood tape, recorded in 2005 and leaked in October 2016 during Donald Trump’s presidential campaign, captured Trump in a conversation with television host Billy Bush on the set of Access Hollywood.
In the recording, Trump made lewd comments about women, including his now-infamous remark that, as a celebrity, he could “do anything” to women, saying, “Grab them by the p-ssy.” He also discussed making advances on a married woman.
"It’s infuriating that the tapes were sat on for 11 years," Union told TIME Magazine of the tapes. "Trump has been in charge of thousands of employees for decades, and the fact that no one felt the need to protect half his workforce, I find unconscionable."
She continued, "I don’t understand—there’s just been so much proof of terrible, crazy, erratic, racist, bigoted, sexist behavior—that someone found it reasonable to sit on it. I guess they thought the success of 'The Apprentice' was more important than protecting women.
Gabrielle Union Praises 'Newfound Representation' With Vice President-Elect Kamala Harris
Gabrielle Union, who has become an advocate for addressing problematic environments and individuals in the industry after her departure from "The Voice," expressed pride in seeing Harris, “knowing that she is her full self, the fullness of her Blackness never having to take a backseat in order to accomplish her goals is beautiful to see," per The Hollywood Reporter.
