One fan of pop star Taylor Swift may be facing legal action after planning an event around The Eras Tour and failing to deliver what was promised.
Fans who went to see The Eras Tour in New Orleans were excited to spend a night celebrating by making friendship bracelets and dancing along to a DJ, but apparently, some fans were left underwhelmed with what they saw when they actually got there.
Taylor Swift Fan Under Fire For Alleged Eras Tour Scam
Over the weekend, Taylor Swift visited New Orleans as part of the second North American leg of her wildly popular Eras Tour. One fan named Rebecca Fox wanted to make the experience special for hundreds of fans by hosting a “Holiday House” event, named for one of the lyrics in Taylor Swift’s song “The Last Great American Dynasty.”
Ahead of the event, Fox spoke to People magazine about her plan. She bought a block of 191 hotel rooms at the Holiday Inn to plan an Eras Tour convention for herself and fellow Swifties who were traveling into town to attend the show.
“I’ve been a super fan of Taylor since the very, very beginning, and when Eras [Tour] was announced, I knew that the one thing I had to do was see it before anybody else did,” Fox told the outlet, describing her own experience when she attended a show in Phoenix.
Due to transportation and travel, she spent less than 24 hours to see Taylor Swift perform in person. “I didn't get to trade bracelets,” she explained. “I didn't get to meet anybody. I didn't get to take a photo outside the stadium.”
Rebecca Fox Wanted To Plan The Ultimate Taylor Swift Experience
Fox wanted to make sure that no one else had the same disappointing experience outside of the concert event. When she heard that the show was coming to her hometown of New Orleans, she decided to create an immersive experience for other fans to enjoy.
“I want to have an experience. I want to actually be immersed in this. I want to enjoy every moment of it, for the whole three days that she's here. How can I do that? I selfishly plan the events that I would want to go to,” she told the publication, explaining how her plans to book 20 hotel rooms quickly spiraled into something much bigger.
“I fought really, really, really hard for every single room and every single person and just so it's entirely clear, I've done this all at cost,” Fox shared, explaining that she charged face value one of the 191 rooms with a $25 deposit.
Taylor Swift Fan Planned ‘Convention’ Around New Orleans Eras Tour
The event, which was supposed to run between October 24 through October 28, was supposed to feature several events. One of the events was bracelet-making sessions, which would allow Swifties a chance to meet and interact. She also planned a DJ and a trivia night. In addition to the room, fans could purchase an All Access Pass or even a V.I.P. Package, which cost $1,000 for hotel block members and $1,250 for non-block guests, according to her website.
“Everything that we're doing is either Taylor-themed or New Orleans-themed,” Fox explained, telling the publication, “Before this, I literally only knew one other Swiftie in New Orleans, and now I have probably 40 really, really dear friends that live here, and I have thousands all over the world.”
Swifties Allege That They Were Scammed By ‘Holiday House’ Event
According to a local Fox affiliate, some of the Taylor Swift fans who attended the event are considering legal action after the event did not live up to the hype. Fox told the station that the hotel was “extremely apprehensive” about the event, adding, “I think once their marketing and sales person said, ‘I don’t think y’all understand what Taylor can do and will bring to our property,’ they changed their minds.”
Fox also insisted that she did not upcharge for the room, which could run as much as $500. Although she says that she did not upcharge for the rooms and made no profit from the bookings, fans feel that they were let down by the event itself.
Hired DJ Claims The Event Sounded 'Like A Scam'
One Swiftie who came to the concert was mom Maegan Traynom, who traveled to the area from Memphis with her daughter in order to see Taylor Swift on stage. Although they did not purchase a room from Fox, they did pay to attend multiple events that Fox hosted.
“The ballroom was completely empty and there were like three vendors. I asked them if we were in the right place and they were like, ‘We have no idea,’” Traynom said. “Everybody works really hard for their money. And anytime somebody is promised a product that they are purchasing or an event, then they should be given what they paid for.”
The DJ who was supposed to perform at the event was also a no-show, telling the station that Fox never confirmed the performance. “I think continuing to take people’s money, push the sales of these events, knowing it would not be what was advertised,” the DJ said. “It sounds like a scam to me.”
Rebecca Fox has reportedly retained an attorney and declined several requests for an interview. Dozens are reportedly demanding their money back from both Fox and the Holiday Inn. IGH, the parent company of the Holiday Inn, did not respond to comment at the time of publication.
