New legal documents shared by Laura Loomer on social media reveal that Loomer—a conservative investigative journalist and close friend of Trump's—alleges that the host of "Real Time With Bill Maher" has tarnished her reputation with his "false, malicious, and defamatory" comments on his September 13, 2024 show.

In the episode, Maher told his viewers:

"I think maybe Laura Loomer’s in an arranged relationship to affect the election because she’s very close to Trump. She's 31, looks like his type. We did an editorial here a few years ago ... it was basically, who's Trump f-cking? Because I said, you know, it's not nobody. He’s been a dog for too long, and it’s not Melania. I think we may have our answer this week. I think it might be Laura Loomer."

Loomer claims that Maher lacks any evidence to back up his allegation and has no grounds for making such a false statement. She accuses him of fabricating the story purely for attention and notoriety, alleging that he is trying to profit from his lies, with HBO complicit in the scheme.

A week after Maher’s controversial comments, Trump took to his Truth Social platform to weigh in, labeling Maher as a “befuddled mess” and describing his show as “boring,” among other harsh critiques.

Bill Maher Says Laura Loomer Is 'Trump's Type'

The lawsuit claims that Maher’s statement, in which he referred to Loomer as “Trump’s type” and implied a romantic relationship with the former president, was made without any factual support.

Loomer contends that Maher’s remarks, delivered to a national and international audience, were designed to harm her reputation. The suit highlights that these defamatory statements were broadcast widely—not just in Sumter County, Florida, where Loomer’s reputation is well-known, but throughout the U.S. and beyond, including on social media and various online platforms.

Laura Loomer Is Also Going After HBO

Bill Maher isn't the only one that Laura Loomer is suing. The recently filed lawsuit also charges HBO with complicity in the defamation, asserting that as Maher’s employer, the network bears responsibility for allowing the airing of misleading and damaging information.

The lawsuit points out, not only the original statement made on September 13, but also a follow-up episode of Real Time on September 20, where Maher continued to mock Loomer during a segment titled “24 Things You Don’t Know About Laura Loomer.”

According to the lawsuit, this segment further compounded the harm by including fabricated statements like “My biggest fear is immigrants taking my job as a right-wing hatemonger” and “I don’t hate all brown people, just the brown ones.”

Loomer is pursuing substantial damages for the reputational and financial harm she alleges to have endured due to Maher’s comments. The lawsuit is still in progress, and neither Maher nor HBO has issued a public response at this time.

Laura Loomer Releases Statement After Filing The Lawsuit

Loomer took to X, the social media platform formerly known as Twitter, to announce her legal action, telling her followers, "Today, I filed a defamation lawsuit against Bill Maher and HBO for falsely accusing me of having an affair with President Donald Trump on a September 13th episode of Maher’s show."

Per the suit, "[Loomer] became a target of Bill Maher and Home Box Office, both of whom advocate for Democrat Party officials and values. They attacked Ms. Loomer with defamatory statements as a vehicle to harm President Trump and his campaign for the presidency of the United States, and to harm Ms. Loomer's credibility."

The suit later added, "Bill Maher is a known Trump hater. It is an outrage that Maher and Home Box Office would try to destroy a professional woman in their zeal to harm President Trump."

Laura Loomer is asking for more than $150 million in damages.
