Al Pacino is known for his legendary roles on the big screen, but behind the Hollywood spotlight, the iconic actor has faced a decades-long battle with alcohol and drugs.
In his new memoir "Sonny Boy," set to release on October 15 through Penguin Press, the "Godfather" actor takes readers on a journey through the challenges he faced and the strength he found in overcoming them, including his path to sobriety.
Al Pacino’s rare insight into his decades-long battle of sobriety offers an intimate look at the man behind the fame, showcasing, not only his resilience, but also his deep commitment to maintaining a healthier, more balanced life away from the pressures of stardom.
Al Pacino Is Over 40 Years Sober
As Al Pacino rose to fame with iconic films like "Jack and Jill" and "Serpico," so did his reputation as a snob. He famously skipped awards shows and snubbed press opportunities.
Beneath this facade, however, lay a struggle to navigate the harsh spotlight of fame. Pacino turned to liquor and drugs to cope with the pressure, revealing the darker side of his celebrity life. “I started to forget things at a very young age — they called them blackouts, so I got nervous,” he told People Magazine.
"I went to AA for a while. It's a great place, but it was not for me," Pacino added. His mentor and friend, Charlie Laughton served as a sponsor of sorts, which the actor says really "helped me."
He is now celebrating a personal triumph—40 years of sobriety.
Al Pacino Opens Up About His Time In New York’s South Bronx
His journey to sobriety is just one of the many deeply personal anecdotes that Pacino shares in "Sonny Boy."
The "Hangman" actor also reflects on his formative years in New York’s South Bronx, vividly recalling his return to the tenement apartment he shared with his mother and grandparents, where strong family bonds blossomed.
In a particular moment, he recounts sharing with his grandfather the story of tattling on a misbehaving classmate, an exchange that left a lasting impression on him for years to come.
“So you’re a rat, huh?” his grandfather asked as Pacino slid to the floor in shame, per People. After that, Pacino explains, “I never ratted on anybody in my life again.”
Al Pacino Opens Up About Fatherhood
Al Pacino has multiple children from different relationships. His eldest daughter, Julie Marie Pacino (born March 16, 1989), is the result of his relationship with acting coach Jan Tarrant. Julie is involved in the arts, particularly filmmaking, and has produced several short films.
Pacino's son, Anton James Pacino (born January 25, 2001), and daughter, Olivia Rose Pacino (born January 21, 2001), are twins he shares with actress Beverly D'Angelo. Both Anton and Olivia tend to keep a low profile, although they have occasionally appeared at public events with their father.
“[Fatherhood] changed me for life,” he told People. “The idea that you're throwing your focus on other humans who happen to be your children … there's the love.”
Al Pacino's Legal Battle With Noor Alfallah
The "Godfather" actor also shares a one-year-old son with Noor Alfallah, who was born in June 2023. Their relationship took a legal turn when Alfallah filed for physical custody, prompting negotiations over child support. In the months following their son's birth, Pacino and Alfallah engaged in discussions regarding financial support, but ultimately, he has agreed to pay her a substantial five-figure sum each month.
Alfallah and Pacino "have reached a compromised amount of child support in the interests of a peaceful resolution and consistent with their desire to maintain an amicable relationship for the best interest of their minor child," the agreement read, which The Blast obtained at the time of filing.
Noor "shall have primary physical custody of Roman, subject to (Pacino's) reasonable rights of visitation with and access to Roman on such dates and at such times to be agreed upon by the Parties," the agreement continued.
Al Pacino Paying $30,000 A Month In Child Support For Infant Son
Ever since September 1, 2023, Al Pacino has been paying his girlfriend, Noor Alfallah, monthly child support of $30,000 for their son, Roman, with payments continuing on the first day of each month thereafter. In addition to this base amount, Pacino must also pay an additional 6% of his "annual gross income" that exceeds $2,500,000 per calendar year, starting with the 2023 tax year. This means that if he earns a substantial amount from a movie in any given year, his child support payments will increase significantly.
Furthermore, the "Once Upon a Time in Hollywood" star is obligated to maintain and cover Roman's existing health insurance, which is available through his employment.
"Sonny Boy" is set to be released on October 15 and is available for preorder at various retailers.
