Britney Spears' youngest child with her ex-husband Kevin Federline turns 18, bringing an end to the hefty $5 million child support payments she has been making for the past 17 years.
The singer is reportedly planning a special gesture to celebrate her son's milestone birthday, one that will outshine anything Federline could afford.
Britney Spears is also said to be looking forward to mending her broken relationship with her children, who reportedly stopped replying to her texts because they were embarrassed by her social media posts.
Britney Spears' Expensive Child Support Payments To Ex-Husband Kevin Federline Have Come To An End
The "Gimme More" singer can finally breathe a sigh of relief from the huge financial obligation as her youngest son, with ex-husband Kevin Federline, turns 18 on Thursday, September 12.
Spears had been paying child support to Federline for the care of their two children, Jayden and Sean Preston, for the past 17 years, which has reportedly accrued to a total of about $5 million.
According to the Daily Mail, a source explained that while she'll be celebrating, Federline would likely be in a sober mood as the cessation of her child support payment will seemingly see him struggle to maintain his lifestyle.
"The amount of money Britney has given Kevin for the two boys is extraordinary and it is enough for any man to support an entire family, which is what she believes he has done," the source explained.
Kevin Federline Was Awarded Full Custody Of Their Kids In 2008
Spears filed for divorce from Federline in November 2006, eight weeks after the birth of their second child, citing "irreconcilable differences."
In their initial divorce settlement, they were granted joint legal and physical custody over their two children.
However, according to People Magazine, the struggling DJ resisted signing it because of Spears' behavior at the time, as she was in rehab.
Following the singer's public meltdown at the time, as well as an incident that saw her lock herself in a room with Jayden, an L.A. court awarded sole custody of their sons to Federline in 2008.
Kevin Federline Requested For The Child Support Amount To Be Increased
According to the Daily Mail, court documents show that Federline has received $240,000 per year for the care of Jayden and Sean Preston from 2007 until 2017.
That amount was increased by court order to $480,000 per year in 2018 after he made a legal appeal for her to increase her payments to $20,000 a month per child.
"I am no longer able to perform as a dancer due to my age, and I have not been as successful in putting out new music as I was in 2008," Federline penned in court documents.
At the time, he claimed he earned $3,000 a month as a DJ but had no health insurance, stocks, assets, or savings.
"I am simply less of a 'name' and less in demand than I was in 2008, which has negatively affected my income," Federline wrote.
The DJ made several other statements to show the lifestyle difference between him and Spears and convince the court to increase his child support payment.
By 2023, Federline had relocated his family to Hawaii in search of better DJ-ing opportunities. His wife, Victoria Prince, was also hired as an assistant volleyball coach at the University of Hawaii.
Federline has since denied that he moved there to take advantage of a legal loophole that would extend Spears' child support obligations.
Britney Spears Has 'Rid Herself Of All Toxic People'
Meanwhile, Spears is reportedly unbothered by Federline's potential financial struggles. A source told the Daily Mail that the singer believes it's his problem to solve.
"Britney is hearing that he is not a happy camper," the sources said, adding that Spears "is living her best life."
The singer has seen some good fortune, as her best-selling tell-all memoir, "The Woman in Me," and a deal with Universal Pictures to make it into a movie have been transformative.
"This film has allowed her to get outside of her head," the source continued. "She is considering creating new music for the soundtrack, but that is still preliminary."
"She has rid herself of all toxic people," they added.
The Singer Has 'Been Reaching Out To Her Sons'
The "Toxic" singer is understood to be excited at the prospect of "having her boys back." Spears and her sons' relationship has been strained due partly to the boys' reported embarrassment about her social media posts.
Although insiders have revealed that she's quite disappointed that she will not be with Jayden on Thursday as he marks his birthday because he is currently living in Hawaii and "will likely be having a celebration with his friends," Spears is going to get him a gift that "is more expensive than anything his father could afford."
"Britney has been reaching out to her sons more and wants to start spending more time with them when they are ready," a source told Us Weekly in July.
