Simone Biles isn't letting go of that 0.3 deduction from her individual balance beam routine at the 2024 Paris Olympics.
For those unaware of the drama, gymnasts must salute the judges with raised hands at both the beginning and end of their routines. However, at the Olympic balance beam final, the judges deducted three-tenths of a point from Biles' score, claiming she did not hold the salute for long enough.
On Friday, Simone Biles threw out the first pitch at the Houston Astros game, where she seemingly took a jab at the Olympic judges.
Simone Biles Throws Out The First Pitch
Following her first pitch, Biles performed a gymnastics salute for everyone at the stadium, and her coach, Cecile Landi, used it as an opportunity to take a jab at the Olympic judges.
"No 0.3 deduction for this salute!!! It was flawless," her coach posted on Instagram, which Biles re-posted to her own Instagram Stories.
This was a dig at the Olympic judges, who deducted 0.3 points from Simone Biles' beam routine because she didn't salute them for long enough.
USAG also commented on Biles' first pitch, writing, “the salute is EVERYTHING.”
What Does The Official Code Of Points State?
Each gymnast is required "to present themselves in the proper manner (arm/s up) and thereby acknowledge the D1 judge at the commencement of her exercise and to acknowledge the same judge at the conclusion of her exercise," according to the current code of points.
This isn't the first time Biles took a jab at the judges for this deduction. During the floor exercise finals, the gymnast made it a point to salute the judges for an unusually long period of time.
“Yes, she did (get a deduction). That’s why on floor she sure did not get deducted for it.” Landi told the media at the time.
Simone Biles Breaks Records At The 2024 Paris Olympics
Despite the controversial 0.3 deductions in her balance beam routine, Simone Biles still broke several records at the 2024 Paris Olympics, further proving she is the G.O.A.T.
At 27 years old, she broke 13 records and solidified her status as the most decorated American gymnast of all time, amassing a total of 11 medals. Additionally, she entered an elite group of only 29 athletes who have earned more than ten medals throughout their careers in both the Summer and Winter Games.
“I’m a lot happier and I chose to do this. So at the end of the day, whatever happens, happens," she said, per the "TODAY" show following the Paris Olympics. "But I’m in a good spot mentally and physically, so you can’t take that away from me. So whenever I’m out there, it’s just pure joy."
"Can’t believe I’m out there again, competing, representing my country, just having fun, doing what I love," she said, thinking back on her decision to withdraw from the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, citing the "twisties."
Will Simone Biles Compete In The 2028 Olympics?
While the athlete has not completely dismissed the idea of competing in a fourth Games, she has not yet confirmed her decision to return. "You know, you never say never," she said on the "TODAY" show. "The next Olympics is on home turf [in Los Angeles] so you just never know."
She added, "I’m just going to relax and see where life takes me."
Her husband, NFL player Jonathan Owens, also commented on the possibility of his wife's return to the Olympics in 2028 when speaking to People Magazine. "It’s going to depend on how she feels because there’s a lot of sacrifice that comes with it," he said. "If she feels like it is time to focus on life... because when you are locked in, you do have to sacrifice a lot and you do miss a lot."
"That's the one thing that she would just have to figure out for herself. And like I said, man, I'm here to support her a thousand percent and whatever she decides to do," Owens added.
Simone Biles Reflects On Her Time At The 2024 Paris Olympics
After securing her final medal at the 2024 Olympic Games, Simone and her teammates returned to the Olympic Village, where the reality of her recent achievements began to sink in.
"Yesterday, when we got back to the village, I looked at Jordan [Chiles], and I started balling my eyes out," Biles said on the "TODAY" show. "She was like, 'I knew it was going to happen, I just didn't know when.' I was just so full of emotion and I finally released all of that."
But she said that they were proud tears. "I was so proud, happy, and bittersweet that the journey is over," the 27-year-old Olympian continued. "It’s so crazy, it happened so quick. My third Olympics."
