Sabrina Carpenter Drops 'Taste' Music Video

Carpenter has fully embraced her "Short n' Sweet" era, launching it with the 2024 summer hit "Espresso," which quickly went viral. Just two months later, her single "Please Please Please" soared to the top of the charts, earning her first No. 1 hit in the U.S.

Last week, she released the full album, "Short n' Sweet," and fans are already obsessed. The album’s opening track, "Taste," has taken the internet by storm, especially due to its music video, which is a dramatic revenge saga where Carpenter, 25, plays a woman who is going after her ex, portrayed by “Halloween” star Rohan Campbell, who is now with another woman, played by 21-year-old Jenna Ortega.

'Taste' Music Video Breaks The Internet

Carpenter’s character goes to extreme lengths, stalking Ortega, breaking into her home, and even trying to kill her, while singing the lyrics, “You’ll just have to taste me when he’s kissing you.”

Ortega isn’t one to back down, however, and she matches Carpenter's intensity with a series of fierce confrontations, including scenes where she sets Carpenter on fire, chops off her arm, throws her out a window, and impales her on a picket fence.

The video takes an unexpected turn with a surprising kiss between the two leading ladies. Ultimately, they reconcile and leave the boyfriend’s funeral together, coffee in hand, laughing off their relationship with their ex.

When attending the premiere of her new movie, "Beetlejuice," Ortega was asked how she feels about Carpenter's new album.

"Oh my god, I think it's beautiful, wonderful, amazing," the actress said. "She's incredible."

Ahead of its release, Carpenter spoke with Jimmy Fallon, where she dished on the video's inspiration.“[The video] was inspired by one of my favorite films, and she was a huge fan of the film,” she said of Ortega. “I’m so excited for you guys to see this video, you have no idea. I think it’s my favorite one I’ve ever done.”

The former Disney Channel star also talked about her album's title, telling the late-night talk show host, “It does really feel like a self-titled album to me, in a weird way. It really just feels like all of these stories and memories — just very blunt, very forward, very fun and just some of the best memories I’ve had.”

After listening to the entire album, many fans suspect that some tracks reference her rumored relationship with Shawn Mendes. For instance, in "Taste," the singer seems to throw shade at Mendes and his shirtless photos with the lyrics, "You're wonderin' why half his clothes went missin' / My body's where they at."

Additionally, when Carpenter and Ortega kill the man in the video, many fans couldn’t help but notice the striking similarities to Mendes' 'Wonder' cover.

Furthermore, the track "Sharpest Tool" appears to target an ex for rekindling a past romance, which could be aimed at Mendes. Mendes was seen sharing a kiss with Camila Cabello in April 2023, just two months after Carpenter was rumored to be spending time with him.

In addition to "Taste" and her two latest hits, "Please Please Please" and "Espresso," Carpenter's new album also features the tracks “Sharpest Tools,” “Coincidence,” “Good Graces,” “Slim Pickins,” “Juno,” “Lie to Girls,” “Bed Chem,” “Dumb & Poetic,” and “Don’t Smile.”

“It’s my second ‘big girl’ album,” she told Variety ahead of its release. “It’s a companion, but it’s not the same. When it comes to having full creative control and being a full-fledged adult, I would consider this a sophomore album.”

"Short n' Sweet" is out now.
