Sabrina Carpenter Claims 'Italians Are Mad' Over 'Espresso' Popularity

Sabrina Carpenter's coffee order may not be exactly what fans might think.

As many know by now, the former Disney Channel star's hit single, “Espresso,” continues to make waves, having dominated the charts and even securing its place as her first number one on the global Spotify charts in April.

The track’s success shows no signs of slowing down as it continues to captivate listeners worldwide--though Sabrina Carpenter thinks it may be making one country unhappy.

In a recent interview with Zane Lowe on "Apple Music 1," the 25-year-old pop star spoke about the popularity of her viral hit "Espresso."

Carpenter joked that her chart-topping track has occasionally made her feel "like an idiot" during coffee shop visits. “Every time I see a café, there’s just a sign that says espresso, and I’m like, ‘Yes.’ Nothing to do with me,” she quipped. “I didn’t invent espresso. The Italians are so mad," she joked.

The “Feather” singer also confessed that she now finds her beverage orders a bit awkward. “They’re just waiting for me to say it [espresso], and I’m like, ‘Tea.'"

"Espresso" has shattered records, becoming Carpenter's first top-five hit on Billboard’s Hot 100 and scoring her first No. 1 in the U.K., Ireland, and Australia. The track’s success didn’t stop there—Carpenter even teamed up with Van Leeuwen to create an espresso-flavored ice cream.

When reflecting on how the hit came to be, the singer told Lowe, "I was in between tour, which is even crazier. My mind was in a place where it was like, there is just no concerns right now, I just need to write as I'm feeling."

Carpenter mentioned that the night before, she had just wrapped up a show in Paris and was "done."

"I went to Japan," she said. "And it was high, low, high, energy environments that were just ... It took me a couple days to sink back into writing. And then when I did, it ended up being all this stuff that was so honest, so emotional, so important to me, because I was going actually crazy."

And that is when the "stupid little song" came to be.

"I'm working late 'cause I'm a singer / Oh, he looks so cute wrapped around my finger / My twisted humor, make him laugh so often / My honey bee, come and get this pollen,"--the lyrics that have taken social media by storm.

Earlier this year, the "Feather" singer opened up about where the lyrics came from. "This was one of those times in my life where it was just like, I just thought I was the sh-t in the moment," she said. "And I think you don't always feel that way, so you kind of have to capture those moments that you do because that's how you find those little."

"There was something really exciting about the fact that there was so much personality throughout the entire song because those are the ones that are really, really fun to sing live with a crowd," she added. "Those are the ones that people, I think when they don't know my music or who I am or anything, they can just tune in to a single song and kind of leave with a better idea of my sense of humor."

Shortly after the new ice cream collaboration was announced, Ben Van Leeuwen, co-founder and CEO of Van Leeuwen, released a statement expressing the company’s excitement to team up with Carpenter.

"Doing a flavor collab with a genuine Van Leeuwen super fan is always a lot of fun. We’re so excited to celebrate Sabrina and her newest hit with this extremely delicious ice cream," Ben Van Leeuwen said. "Meet the ice cream you’ll be thinking ‘bout all night. Espresso ice cream. Rich, chewy brownies. Chocolate chips. Swirls of fudge."

In addition to talk about her smash hit "Espresso," Sabrina Carpenter opened up about her new album, "Short n' Sweet."

“I called it 'Short n’ Sweet' for multiple reasons," she told Lowe. "It was not because I’m vertically challenged. It was really like I thought about some of these relationships and how some of them were the shortest I’ve ever had and they affected me the most."

"I think about the way that I respond to situations, and sometimes it is very nice and sometimes it’s not very nice," the artist continued. "And again, the thing about albums, projects, writing songs, it’s all moments. So harder for other people to understand that when they’re listening to something that’s going to take them through maybe a lot of years, hopefully a lot of years, is that I’m not the same person that I was when I wrote that."

She continued, "I’ve always yearned to care enough about a person or a situation or a relationship in my life that it provokes that much feeling in me, because I think that’s why we’re here, I think, you know?”

Sabrina Carpenter's new album will release on August 23.
