Rumors have been swirling that NFL star Travis Kelce might be joining Adam Sandler in the much-anticipated "Happy Gilmore" sequel.
As the long-awaited follow-up to the 1996 comedy film gears up to film in New Jersey, it’s expected to include a cast of real professional golfers and some surprise cameos, according to Sandler.
Of course, one name that has been mentioned is Travis Kelce, as he is a golf enthusiast. In fact, the Kansas City Chiefs player dropped hints about the movie sequel during a May episode of his podcast, "New Heights."
Months later, Adam Sandler confirmed that Travis Kelce would star in "Happy Gilmore 2."
Travis Kelce To Make Cameo In 'Happy Gilmore' Sequel
Adam Sandler dropped the news on the August 20 episode of "The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon," teasing that the 34-year-old NFL star has a "nice something" lined up in the upcoming film.
"[Kelce] has mentioned it and so we have a nice something for Travis. He is going to come by," Sandler told Fallon, noting that the footballer is a "very nice guy."
"You guys would love him in real life. What a big, handsome guy," the actor added. "He's a stud and he's so funny."
Sandler, who’s back as the lead actor and co-writer, spilled that production kicks off in a "couple weeks" in New Jersey. He also shared that he and co-writer Tim Herlihy have been working tirelessly, saying, "We wrote our a--es off. We're continuing to try to make it a movie that you guys will like."
Kelce is also starring in Ryan Murphy’s FX series “Grotesquerie” and the Lionsgate action-comedy film “Loose Cannons."
Adam Sandler Dishes On 'Happy Gilmore 2'
Along with revealing that Kelce will make a cameo in the upcoming sequel, Sandler also discussed where production stands and what fans can expect.
“We’re going to do ‘Happy Gilmore,’ thank you. This is happening,” Sandler said on the late-night talk show. “We’re getting ready to shoot it in New Jersey. We start in a couple of weeks. It’s good. We worked hard on the script. We didn’t want to let anybody down."
"People have been asking me for a long time. We’re really excited about it," he continued. "So many of the golfers are being nice and will be a part of it.”
Travis Kelce Talks 'Happy Gilmore' Sequel
While discussing the news that the Happy Gilmore sequel is in the works, Kelce and his brother mulled over what role he might play.
"I’ll be a f–king extra… anything to get around 'Happy Gilmore,' an Adam Sandler film or set — count me in," Kelce said, per Us Weekly. "I'll do anything in the movie. I'll be a part of it any way I possibly can."
Adam Sandler Is 'Working Hard' On 'Happy Gilmore' Sequel
Earlier this year, Sandler chatted with People Magazine and couldn’t contain his excitement for the upcoming "Happy Gilmore" sequel.
"We worked hard trying to write something that we thought people would have a good time with, and I'm more than excited, probably the most excited I've been in many years to shoot something," he said.
Sandler is teaming up with none other than Josh Safdie, who will be directing the sequel. “He was very hands-on,” Sandler told IndieWire. “Right when he became a part of it, he had thought after thought, and I thought I was just going to do a standard stand-up special. I had an act that I’ve been working on and all my stuff [prepped], and then Josh came up with some ideas that were different than that.”
'Happy Gilmore' Remains One Of The Most Talked About Adam Sandler Movies
"Happy Gilmore" is a 1996 sports comedy film starring Adam Sandler in the title role. Thanks to its humor and Sandler's performance, the film was a huge hit and has become a cult classic over the years.
Netflix confirmed it will produce "Happy Gilmore 2" in May, stating that it is "currently unclear how the film will resurrect Gilmore’s golf career, but one thing’s for sure: In the real world, at least, 'Happy Gilmore' is a legend."
Christopher McDonald, Julie Bowen, and the late Carl Weathers also starred in the film, but it's still up in the air whether they’ll be returning to their roles.
